The Eragon movie wasn't a disappointment it was a horrific attempt at making a movie much in the same vein as The Last Airbender...which doesn't exist , i honestly enjoyed the books up until the fight with Galbatorix which was honestly one of the worst ending fights i've read...Eragon, Arya, Murtagh and Nasuada all being ultra cockblocked at the end also annoyed me

User avatar
#182 - alarubra (10/27/2015) [-]
I actually really liked the ending, and didn't see it as Deus Ex Machina (as I've seen people claim) or "its' all done now bai." Honestly, I think people just like bitching. The ending fight played out in the only way it rationally could have with the good guys winning, and there were hints as to how it would go from book 1. I would have liked a little more detail after the fight, as to how things went, but honestly, everything was wrapped up pretty succinctly, and it was already a huge book, and the fourth installment in a series that was supposed to be a strategy.

And, no the good guys didn't all get a fairy tale romance happy ending. In fact, it was largely the opposite. As halor put it, they're all "cockblocked." But, they all acted in character, and the world had internal consistency. I just saw bitching about the details J.K. Rowling has given about how Harry Potter worked out after the ending because it was all too happy. Now I see bitching about how The Inheritance Cycle ended because they got realistic bittersweet endings.

User avatar
#171 - mintea (10/12/2015) [-]
To be completely honest, it's been so long since I've read them and looked into anything about them, I would not be able to argue what is good or bad about them well without reading and looking into it more again, and I don't care to do that since I don't even like the books.
The series did get a whole lot of criticism though, so if you're interested in seeing arguments for the series being bad, I'm certain you'll be able to find plenty by googling them. Many will most likely match what mine used to be before I forgot them all.
User avatar
#173 - unikornking (10/12/2015) [-]
If you really can't remember any legitimate criticisms, I imagine it's more like a meh to you, if you really thought it was a piece of shit you wouldn't forget why you think that way. But if those books really are "shit", what do you consider good?
User avatar
#174 - mintea (10/12/2015) [-]
I don't think they're unreadable garbage. I did read them all, I just don't think they're very good. But no, there have been things I loved and forgotten what I thought were so good about them, same goes for things I didn't think were good.

I'll name some I thought were much better:
The Worldbreaker Saga so far is very good, I think.
Joe Abercrombie's First Law stuff (though book 1 was quite worse than the rest)
ASOIAF (though I found A Feast For Crows incredibly boring, and I can't remember how good I thought the books after that were. Which is odd, I know. I remember the books before AFFC being good, though.)
Leviathan Wakes (though this is scifi)

User avatar
#175 - unikornking (10/12/2015) [-]
Kind of surprising to see you list SOIAF, I see a lot of people saying they're bad because of length/ amount of detail ( Though I personally love them).
User avatar
#176 - mintea (10/12/2015) [-]
I dislike the amount of detail. Not sure if I can say how much description he puts in is actually bad, but I do dislike how much there is. What I do think is kinda bad is how much description he puts into random people's food and other such unimportant things, especially when they're minor characters (I might be remembering wrong but I think this happens fairly often?)

I do love the series though and do think it's very good and done well.

User avatar

User avatar

hard water is ice
#41 - ainise (10/11/2015) [-]
"Hard" is not what you'd assume it is if you knew nothing of mineral waters. In this instance it's not refering to the density of an object but rather how difficult it is on the pipes it's running through. Hard Water deteriorates things faster than soft water and has mixed benefits & difficulties upon digestion.

Hard water refers to water that is rich in Limestone and Chalk. You can tell if you have hard water by looking at the residue left behind on thigns that are in constant contact with water and are not made of metal(usually..in rare cases it can show up on metal too, but it's easiest to see on porceilin). The residue is fairly hard to get off and is between the Red and Yellow spectrum, as the image shows - generally sitting around a dingey orange color. The color shows how rich it is in either Chalk or Limestone, more specifically Magnesium vs Calcium vs Limestone.

It's called hard water...

It's a joke, mate. Hard water is a type of water that is rich in limestone and Chalk, which is made up of mostly Calcium and Magnesium. It has numerous benefits and risks most of which aren't understood and the easiest way to know if you have hard water is to look in your shower after it's not been cleaned in a while. If there's anything between the Yellow to Red spectrum(generally orange), you likely have Hard Water.

#54 - ainise (10/11/2015) [-]
**ainise used "*roll picture*"**
**ainise rolled image**I was explaining the joke.

"Hard", in normal context means dense or hard to seperate. Like how a Diamond is considered harder than steel. However, in the joke it's a play on words since "hard" in water, specifically in irrigation, refering to the contents of the water.

It's a subversion of what the word usually means in hopes to make people giggle a little and click a super happy pumpkin. It's not physics or chemistry..it's a joke.
User avatar
#55 - fukatron (10/11/2015) [-]
...I thought you were trying to explain the video, cuz if someone doesn't get the joke, as simple as it is, they aren't deserving of a 2 paragraph, scientifically detailed explination. Just red thumbs.
I was just saying, the video is most likely physics, not chemistry is all.

#58 - ainise (10/11/2015) [-]

But hey, I'm a teacher at heart. It's ignorance not stupidity. If it only takes 20 seconds to solves someones ignorance, it seems like time well spent.

What? Yes it is. Hard water is water with a high concentration of minerals. Soft water is water with a relatively low concentration of minerals. Ocean water is hard water, and I've certainly never emerged from the ocean dry. My house runs off a well, which is full of hard water. Yet I'm still able to get wet when I get in my shower.

What makes you think hard water isn't wet? Are you thinking of the mineral buildup resulting from hard water? That's not hard water, dude. Those are just minerals.

"Hard water" is specifically a term referring to water that is high in Limestone and Calcium. High in this instance is a relative term, but I digress. My house, for example, has hard water. It leaves an orange coating on our ceramic and has mix of health benefits and risks that should be avoided in young children. I explained it better somewhere else in this thread if you're interested.
