Right, but instead of saying she was gonna stab you, she just comes at you swinging the knife.
User avatar #247 - dammriver (11/17/2014) [-]
Yeah, there's a lot that will go into this case, especially since it attracted so much media attention. I'd expect to see a full toxicology report, coroner's report, and comments from friends/family about how she was "f***ing psycho" or "the sweetest girl in the world".

It's going to be a really long, drawn out case.
#186 - sexuality (11/16/2014) [-]
Threat has a more negative connotation than confront. Your opinion is obviously different, but xsap has no evidence that the victim threatened the cops with a knife.

Since she had the knife in her hand when she "threatened" the cops, your initial argument is invalid. The cops didn't go to the house and get told, empty handed, "I'm going to stab you" there was a girl in the house with a knife.

If I walk up to you with a knife, it could be argued that I was confronting you with said knife. If I walked up to you with a knife and said "I'm going to fucking stab you" it could be argued that I was threatening you with a knife.

So, here's the question, if you were in a house and someone said "I'm going to stab you" while holding a knife, you'd talk slowly and leave, whereas if someone was holding a knife near you, you'd absolutely be forced to defend yourself, with a gun, and shoot that person in the head?

I'm tired of arguing, but from what I read she didn't threaten anyone, that's all I was saying. That's it. So, please, keep thumbing me down you guys, it's fine, I don't care, I just want other people to realize that vernaculars are important.
User avatar #240 - dammriver (11/17/2014) [-]
No, my argument isn't invalid. I'm not even talking about the case. I'm talking about in general, how confronting is more powerful than threatening.

Also, I'm not the one thumbing you down.

Another thing; you shouldn't make your decisions until both sides get a chance to defend themselves.

Now, I don't think you understand how confrontations or threats work. It's not a simple "I'm going to stab you". If they are threatening you, they usually give you options. For instance, if I was being threatened, the person would say something along the lines of "If you don't get out of my fucking house, I'll kill you motherfucker." At that point, yes, I would remain calm, and say something along the lines of "Okay sir (or ma'am), just let me zip my bag back up and I'll be gone" and I'd keep talking in a steady voice until I was in my truck and calling for a couple officers to get here.

Confrontation isn't just holding a knife near me. If they were standing near me with a knife in their hand, I would ask them to put it down, which would either lead to a threat or a full confrontation.
Confrontation would be where said guy with knife is walking/running toward me, knife pointed in my direction, about to stab me. At this point, (s)he is beyond reasoning, and I either turn and run or use my bag as a shield.

In a police perspective, getting called to a domestic, going inside, and having someone run at me with a knife would most likely lead to me drawing my weapon and potentially firing at/killing the suspect. Remember, the shooting hand is where an officer's side-arm is. For instance, I shoot with my right, so I would have a hip-holster on my right side. If I shot with my left, my holster would be on my left. With that, your less-lethal is generally on the opposite side, facing handle-forward. This means that I have to cross my right arm over my body, pull my TASER, tell the person that they will be tazed, then fire. All that has to be done over the course of one-two seconds.

Well then lets stop that stupid "I'm gonna taze you" and make tazers a more prevalent part of the police force as well a greater focus on non-lethal measures

The safety of our homes depend on them, I respect them immensely for that but that doesn't mean I can just turn a blind eye when they do something wrong.

I know it's not entirely their fault because of that stupid legal thing but we need to reform how they handle an average situation because these cases are slowly happening more often and we should stop it before we just go full Judge Dredd on people (I know that probably isn't gonna happen but you get the sentiment).

This will really help the public's opinion on the police as well because they will know that they will always try to just incapacitate the criminal.

Regardless I still hold police in very high regard and would never dream of outright saying and believing that they are shit because in hectic moments they didn't do an absolutely perfect job so really what I want to do is stack the deck in their favor and make so they won't have to use lethal force because the non-lethal options would be easy and at the ready.

Truthfully, the whole Department of Justice needs to re-think a lot. A lot of things need to be re-worked, and we should follow the footsteps of some other countries.

Like, when we give someone 50+ years for illegally downloading music, while a murderer will get 25 years (not all cases, but you get the picture). A lot of things need to be re-thought, and the media definitely should start to cover the good things that police do, like that video where an officer pulled over a woman who ran a red light, and saved her life with abdominal thrusts (source: www.mlive.com/news/kalamazoo/index.ssf/2014/08/watch_kalamazoo_public_safety.html
Also, another that I found in the search for the first: www.foxnews.com/us/2014/09/20/dramatic-video-shows-new-york-city-police-officer-save-choking-victim-on/ )
They save lives on a daily basis, and it should be recognied much more often.

User avatar #252 - dammriver (11/17/2014) [-]
And with the good comes the bad. Every now and again, you're going to get an officer that does it strictly for the power trip.

Kinda like the firefighters that do it just for the title, and won't go into a burning building for any reason whatsoever.

The thing is, the good outweigh the bad by a lot.

Stern yet grateful.

(and 91 was my comment number lol)

Mine is a 2000 with a 4.6L V8 as well, and it has a few security features (a button under the dash that locks your car in park when pressed is my favorite. Basically, your car won't come out of park as long as the button is activated, no matter how hard they try). It also has this fuel-stop in the trunk. If I get hit hard enough in the rear-end, the button pops up and stops all fuel to minimize fire (they did that with a lot of models, so I'm sure yours has one. It should be on the left side of your trunk, under the cloth-like layer). It also has that awesome cooling system that runs through all of the fluids to keep them cool in high performance.

User avatar #105 - dammriver (09/15/2014) [-]
You might think so, but when you have grown up in the area for all of your life, it's actually much more likely than you think to stumble upon someone you know. Not all of us are like that, and people in cities don't have to worry as much, but I operate out of a mainly residential town, and I know a good amount of the people here. The worst part is when you know the address given is a family member's.

EMS ambulance 7 years before I became a nurse. I was usually more anxious than scared to see the scene, especially as the years passed. That usually changed when i got to a scene for a reported chest pain, only to find out it was a gunshot or stab wound to the chest and the cops weren't even enroute yet.

Well, I've kinda done a lot of things.. I'm a very active member of my local FD, and am a certified EMS provider.. I'm also going through fire school right now, so by May I'll be a fully-certified firefighter, and after that I'm going to get in to the next available EMT course. I became a security guard, and am fully pursuing my goal of becoming a Police Officer. Graduated high school, and living life one day at a time, yanno?

Seems like you've been around.

As for myself.. quite a few things happened. Started driving school, started internship, got fired because I'm too impatient and unskilled for electrician as well as lacking interest, developed a strong bond with a friend, his family and especially the kids, which turned me into a great caretaker over time, going to become a kindergardner some day because of that, now looking for an apprenticeship either as salesman or as cook.

All in all, life is good. I'm still fat and drink too much, though.

My biggest problem is children. I refuse to go to calls involving kids and pedis. We had a pedi CODE a while back and I just couldn't bring myself to go.

I've had my fair share of CODEs and doing CPR already, but it's just something about calls with kids that I can't handle

Yeah, that's the same thing I hear with a lot of people.

But, on the brighter parts of it, the brotherhood is amazing, the bonds between us and t=police officers is awesome, and the fact that we are a community that does everything from have a cookout at somebody's house to fighting a fire in a matter of minutes is also awesome.. It's one big family, and I really enjoy it.

Well, where to start... job offer from dad at his company. Well, not his, but he's a high ranked animal there, so I'll be learning under his wings. He's living a couple hours away from here, means I'll have to move. Electrician! Something I've wanted to do since I was a toddler. Obviously wanted it because my dad does it, and sons usually try to become like their dads, eh?^^ Well I still want to, this time out of own reasons though. Learning how to install, reapir and maintain electric stuff, for example.. **** I barely know anything about it, but hey, I'm going to learn.
User avatar #1153 to #1152 - dammriver (03/25/2014) [-]
Don't worry about replies lol

And that's awesome! I've been studying electrical for the past 3 and a half years.. I'm not really a fan, but yanno..

Naaah, I need to sleep early. Not that tomorrow is anything, just getting used to more sleep. Which is also by far better for my metabolism, which I need.

Who do you miss?
User avatar #1120 to #1119 - dammriver (05/05/2013) [-]
Zephy, Shy, and a couple more... Those two are closer to "top" of my list right now, though...

I know about Zeph, thanks to Delta, but Shy... I just wish I could give him a hug :/

User avatar #1123 to #1122 - haunterbrony (05/05/2013) [-]
Let's just say I hope he's still breathing. One time the only reason he didn't do it is because the lack o a rope. I dearly hope he didn't find one.
User avatar #1124 to #1123 - dammriver (05/05/2013) [-]
Did he ever say why he wanted to?
User avatar #1125 to #1124 - haunterbrony (05/05/2013) [-]
He is constantly depressed. I tried several times to get to him but.. well, he never really opened. Doesn't mean I won't try it again when he returns from wherever he is.
User avatar #1126 to #1125 - dammriver (05/05/2013) [-]
I'm going to try to take a passionate/calm and caring approach at first, then, if that doesn't work, I'm going to try to be more 'assertive'... Damn my mind and its desire to help everything with everything. I guess it's a good thing, though, because it makes me stand out from the average crowd...

Anyway, I hope he comes back...

not sure since only thing they would be doing is a round trip to here......my friend in Cali wont mind having me over there but my friends in Vegas may get a little irritated at how long it may take for me to actually start paying them rent....only problem I have is getting there and such......not sure how anyone can help me with this and not entirely sure how to get their own my own.

Somewhat a waiting game, now...
What else is bothering you?

Ponyville kind if having a lot of drama lately.....and stuff.

Mostly my worries are in transportation seeing as how I have no way to cover that cost on my own.

Well, I was going to go to sleep, but decided to check how things are here first. How are you?
User avatar #1064 to #1043 - dammriver (04/03/2013) [-]
Just as an update, my aunt had a severe heart attack last night... We didn't find out today, but she apparently died on our floor, and came back in the ambulance...

Right now, she is being transferred to another hospital that specializes with the heart... Before they left, though, they couldn't stabilize her heart rate... I don't know if she's going to be ok, but I hope so...
#1065 to #1064 - haunterbrony (04/03/2013) [-]
I'm certain it will be fine. And if not... let's not think about the worst possible outcome for now. Are you feeling better?
User avatar #1066 to #1065 - dammriver (04/03/2013) [-]
Slightly. I'm making headway in the 'peer counseling' thing that I've set up. We had the main 'starter' meeting today, and now we're waiting on getting members and setting everything up...
#1067 to #1066 - haunterbrony (04/03/2013) [-]
Now that is at the very least something. I wish you good luck with that, and hope you and your aunt will be well.
User avatar #1068 to #1067 - dammriver (04/03/2013) [-]
Thanks, and me too...

How are you?
User avatar #1069 to #1068 - haunterbrony (04/03/2013) [-]
I'm doing fine. Only problem is, I can't be arsed to study, since I have neither motivation, nor pressure due to few time. Funny enough it is in less than two weeks, so I should feel pressure.
User avatar #1070 to #1069 - dammriver (04/03/2013) [-]
I know what you mean... That feeling of "Why do today what you can put off until tomorrow?"
User avatar #1071 to #1070 - haunterbrony (04/03/2013) [-]
Heh, exactly that feeling. Why do a presentation today if you can throw some random **** together the day after?

Hah, yep...

User avatar #1044 to #1043 - dammriver (04/01/2013) [-]
I'm ok. Not guaranteeing anything for tomorrow, but I don't really want to go to school in this mood... I hope some people don't take it personally.
User avatar #1045 to #1044 - haunterbrony (04/01/2013) [-]
Huh... maybe you should just take the day off tomorrow, which of course means fake being sick. Please consider this if you feel too bad to go to school.
User avatar #1046 to #1045 - dammriver (04/01/2013) [-]
If I feel too bad, then yeah... If not, I might just head over to the guidance office some time tomorrow...
User avatar #1047 to #1046 - haunterbrony (04/01/2013) [-]
I understand how you must feel right now. If you feel like school will help due to distraction, then go. If you're like me and can't focus on anything in such a situation, it would probably be better for you to just stay at home, and try to relax a little.
User avatar #1048 to #1047 - dammriver (04/01/2013) [-]
Yeah, I'll see how I feel tomorrow... I have some good teachers, so I think that they'll understand... I'm just hoping that my father follows through and goes to a rehab facility tomorrow.
User avatar #1049 to #1048 - haunterbrony (04/01/2013) [-]
And if not, you just gotta push him a little so he goes.

I really need to sleep now, good night. I'll be dropping by tomorrow. Love you man.

Christ... are you okay? I mean, given the circumstances, dumb question, but.. are you still running?
User avatar #1059 to #1058 - dammriver (04/02/2013) [-]
Yeah, I am. I think I'll be able to handle stress like a ******* champ when I'm older.

She went into very severe respiratory distress, and her lips were purple before the first guys even got here. There was a point when she stopped breathing altogether, but she'll [hopefully] be ok... She was doing better once they got her in the ambulance, but she still wasn't too good...
User avatar #1060 to #1059 - haunterbrony (04/02/2013) [-]
Buddy, you already do handle stress like a ******* champ. Highly doubt many could do that without breaking down.

Holy **** man.. I hope everything will be fine. For now we can only wait and drink tea. Speaking of tea, I recommend sweet chai tea. That is one hell of a bad time to speak about tea.
User avatar #1061 to #1060 - dammriver (04/02/2013) [-]
Tea is love

User avatar #1062 to #1061 - haunterbrony (04/02/2013) [-]
And I say again, if there is something you don't actually need and could neglect it, in order to focus on more important things, then I highly suggest doing it. As for now, I need sleep. Good night, and you should go to sleep, too.. since it is something after 10 PM at your place, I guess.
