An aluminum bat doesn't have to hit with that much force either
Heck a punch can break the hardest part of your skull if aimed correctly. All it takes is force in one direction and force in another.
Bones don't need an immense amount of force to break from the side. Lengthwise, bones are pretty damn strong, but you can break a bone just by twisting it the wrong way.
And given that she probably was having an adrenaline rush at the time and swinging at full power, it doesn't matter the object as long as it's relatively dense- she can break a bone. Umbrella rods are hollow yet made of an incredibly dense material.
Also. Being swung by a terrified woman rapidly several times? Definitely can break a bone. Don't assume she hit him just once with the umbrella, she's being mugged, of course she's going to scream and hit him multiple times, so even if the first strike or even the second strike wasn't enough to break the bone the third strike on an already impacted (and still recovering from the last blow) area of the bone can break it.
Heck you can shatter a skull with a glass bottle and skulls are probably the strongest bones in the body.

Well then he must have been god damn retarded because the only way I see that happening is if he kept his arm nicely extended for her to bash rather than reacting like a normal person and bending his arm, which would stop her from being able to break it.
And glass bottles aren't exactly feeble, just saying.

It's like if a person gets hit by a car rather than attempting to move out of the way of any further incoming wheels they just end up being hit around like a ragdoll. Your brain doesn't process the incident of getting hit nearly quickly enough (a burn for example, your brain takes less than a fraction of a second to react) and the instinct is often to flinch rather than to escape the danger.
Man probably flinched and, hand forgotten still on the purse, shielded his face and skull from the blows with the other (as is natural- you can live without an arm, protect the brain at all costs)

Yea but in a panic all the muscles in your body typically seize up at least a little bit, meaning that his outstretched arm would still be slightly bent. And without either proper leverage or an overwhelming amount of force, it would not be broken.
Also, the actual umbrella part would really soften the blow from the rod, both upon impact and through slowing down the swing. I still very highly doubt that it could do so.

Slightly bent doesn't make the bone any less straight. That also doesn't account for the fact that even bent there are a million angles she could have swung at, many of which just right to break a bone.
Have you never gotten a bone broken? Especially a lower arm bone, which are considered the weakest limb bones in the body? It really doesn't take much and posture doesn't always affect much.
Also, to clear up cos I think you're misunderstanding. By side, I don't mean just one side or the other of your bone, I mean the entire circumstance. By lengthwise I mean you could easily stand on your hands and not break a bone.
All she had to do was hit right. If the umbrella was bundled up, which it probably was, it wouldn't soften the blow at all. It'd actually help streamline it.
It's like if you put a soft comforter over a bat and then hit someone, they're still going to get a broken bone.
Bones do not take an overwhelming amount of force to break. They really don't. They're strong and resist impact, but just like safety glass it only really takes a fast enough object to break it. For example, a bird doesn't weigh much at all and is mostly feathers that "slow it down" but going at 30 MPH it can break (not impact, but break) a car window. The average person can throw a ball at that speed, if she was swinging the umbrella full force it would have easily broken the bone.
The other thing is that bones can be broken in a variety of different ways, from being shattered to snapped to fractured. I see no problem with her fracturing the bone like a windshield that got hit by a bird.

It takes significantly more force to snap an arm when hitting at any angle other than on the elbow directly at full extent (bottom of the V) than you appear to think. Humans may be fairly fragile, but they can still be damned hard to wreck when in the right position.
#79 - elcreepo (09/25/2014) [-]
Also why are you talking like it was the elbow joint that was broken? An arm was broken.
Arms have three bones. All of which can break at any point along the bone.
If the arm was perfectly straight and she hit the elbow, yeah that does some serious damage but that's not actually a broken arm that's a broken elbow.
The chance of it having been the radius or humerous is pretty damn low considering how thick those bones are (radius still possible if she swung hard enough), chance of a fracture in the ulna is pretty damn plausable from any impact.

A slightly tilted bone is still straight. it's at an angle in the space it is in, but it's still straight. It's not like the rod is coming down at one angle perfectly straight.
There are plenty of angles you can hit it at.
Also your ulna is so thin that it's one of the most commonly broken bones in the body.
If she struck the leg, or was on the radial side of the arm, I'd be tempted to agree with you but the ulna can break from banging your arm against a table in a simple fall. Given you don't fall at 30 mph...

Glass bottles shatter on impact. They're dense but nowhere near as strong as steel. Which the umbrella is made out of.
Also, consider that this happened very quickly, within 30 seconds. He either didn't have time to react, or when he moved his arm he provided the other end of the force necessary to speed the process of breaking his arm.
He probably was stunned that she screamed and started beating him, also.
A normal person who goes to steal a purse tries to steal it discreetly, the surprise at being caught is enough to momentarily stun a person. It has nothing to do with whether or not he's retarded or weak.

Shins? You went with shins....
If you're gonna mention a strong leg bone, you mention the "femur".
