that's a good theory but it's a theory. I think you mean Lamark and his theory was that giraffes had to... what's the word? reach to the trees so their neck strated stretching over time.

But you must know what I mean, everyone gets a hard on for evolution and like this post, it's treated as it's a fact when it really isn't.

what has happened is that some guy had a theory, it apparently fits with what we can see so it must be true, but we haven't gotten to'cause' level yet.

Also, darwins views were distorted, he say that most of the time animals are very keen to each others, even across species, but that isn't talk about or taught because his findings were used as a justification of the "survival of the fittest" model which was used as an excuse for wars and for the economic model that "everyone is against everyone". In union, (true unity recognized everyone's individuality, paradoxically, we don't need to become the same) we could prosper faster and everything. It's a view that is in somepeople's interests and so is mantained.

But must people's thought patterns goes like

science is never wrong > science says evolution is real > evolution is real

how's that different from?

God is never wrong > church is god's voice >god says killing is wrong> killing is wrong

It's also people just repeating what they heard from the authority they recognize. Most people don't even know what they talk about they're just basically repeating other people's opinions
User avatar #124 - dafiltafish (08/08/2014) [-]
Darwinism is not a product of the English gent who went to the south pacific. That was used as justification for slavery, imperialism, and war and (forgive me, I am bad with names) was proposed by someone commentating on The Origin of Species.

Anyone who thinks science is never wrong is an idiot, Evolution is an accepted theory (a plausible or scientifically acceptable general principle or body of principles offered to explain phenomena) which means that many scientist have come to the same conclusion that one organism, through reproduction, will either make itself more or less suited to its environment and depending on how many individuals are in fact suited to the environment, the species may or may not continue.

A theory is one step away from a law, the difference being laws have indisputable outcomes, and theories can have many outcomes. Evolution (Darwin's evolution that is) is not some hypothesis you or anyone can throw out because you disagree. To strike down theories, you need counter-evidence, and a lot of it.

If you want to prove Darwin wrong, I suggest you start digging as well as being open to the possibility that Darwin is right.

Let's take vestigal structures such as anatomical atavisms. An atavism is the reappearance of a lost character specific to a remote evolutionary ancestor and not observed in the parents or recent ancestors of the organism displaying the atavistic character. So if it is true that animals evolved from a common ancestor we should be seeing remnants of said ancestors.

Take for example whales, the whale is a mammal meaning that it evolved from a land animal. If it is true that the whale evolved from a land animal such as Pakicetus then we should be seeing leftovers from mammal like features. And that's precisely what we find. We can find hindlimbs in whales showing that they once in their life had functioning legs. Fish on the other hand have never had leg atavisms because they did not have said common ancestor.

yeah what i'm against is taking it as absolute truth. We haven't even begun to see how the quantum world plays a part in all this so to say we have THE answer seems pretty... blind sighted to me.
User avatar #98 - dafiltafish (08/08/2014) [-]
You are correct, we cannot take it as an absolute truth, but based off what we have found in the fossil record and based off breeding animals, there is a lot that makes sense with evolution.

The giraffe example is one of my favorites, The trees are not getting taller on their own accord, the giraffes are just killing off the short ones, just as the short giraffes have a harder time finding food and will either cope with it and eat something else or starve, the latter will eliminate short giraffes.

that makes perfect sense to me and explains why the giraffes we see today are so damn big. Granted it isn't really one of Darwin's theories, but some other guy whose name escapes me, point is that evolution makes a lot of sense when it is broken down into one relationship.
#102 - selfdenyingbeggar (08/08/2014) [-]

No, Settling is Getting something you CAN afford.

Wanting is Wanting something you can't.

You Don't WANT a Yaris.
But you settle for one because it's in your budget.

You still go into debt just to get the load of crap.

Because no bank is going to help you get a Hybrid that can hit 200.
User avatar #1946968 - dafiltafish (08/08/2014) [-]
Settling is getting "the next best thing" for whatever reason. with cars, it usually feature based when you can afford both cars new. If you had a strict budget, you wouldn't even consider anything outside of it.

"I settled for a mustang V6 because The Genesis coupe didn't have enough cargo space"
"I settled for the CR-Z because the Fiesta ST had worse gas mileage"
"I settled on the Mercedes because the Tesla wasn't German enough"

yeah... I mean I suppose you could do price, but that just means you didnt do your price research when you went to buy a car.

or it could be just getting something in the same class even though it isnt what you wanted.

In conclusion, you are kind of right, but technicalities and my persistence to correct them are the meaning of this conversation.

mcknyte, I need some help.

There is this 93 del sol for sale that i am going to go and check out tomorrow, 111,000 miles, decent shape, and manual trans. There is also this miata for sale 400 miles away in Seattle that's a little cheaper, but I can't see it until friday.

Now... what the hell should i do? I'm going to be questioned about buying the honda tommorow and I am not sure I like it as much what with the front wheel drive. i mean, the honda even has snow tires.

the question is really, is the del sol a good substitute for the mx5?
User avatar #295 to #294 - mcknyte (06/17/2014) [-]
If you can live with the front wheel drive, yeah go for it. Insurance might even be a little cheaper.

But no track day, bro.

... there is always a track day.

spec civic is still fairly popular.

I'm thinking 6.2L Small block with a supercharger.

I'll have to tub the trunk to get bigger tires on it, and some tasteful flares.

It's going to be great

Dear Economic,

Only listening to those who agree with you is not helping your image among those of us closer to the left side of the political spectrum (many conservatives are nowhere near as drastic as you are, so added up, that is a pretty big majority). I do hope that you will one day try to see things from other perspectives instead of simply blocking people at the first sign of disagreement.

If you do end up reading this, please do take it to heart. I don't want to hate you, I for one like a good and friendly debate, but the way you insult and stereotype people is making that task pretty hard.

Thanks for your time,

P.S. You have actually kick-started my interest in European politics, so thank you for that too.

Hello out there fellow citizens. I would like to introduce to you Team Astra, or Astra Industries.

My name is Harrison Hedge, project leader. I live in Spokane Washington and I am a student attending Eastern Washington University. Allow me to express my extreme enthusiasm for a chance to build a star-ship from the ground up. I have wanted to do something like this for some time now, so being given the opportunity to do so means a lot.

Other team members include WindowsWizard and XXXX. The former also being from Spokane Washington, attending school at the local community college, he will be assisting in design work as well as modeling. XXXX will be our media outlet and will also assist in modeling and design, he is a student as well attending college in North Idaho, where he resides.

We are all very excited to work on this project and hope that that shines through to our final designs.

The weapon we have created will fulfill the Breezefire DX specifications and, as you can see, is visually unique and maintains a bit of Xi'an style.

Once again, thank you for this opportunity, we hope to see you in round 2.
