Curiosity I'd say is also to be rewarded. Worst case scenario, you die. So what, was going to happen anyway, just so long as you don't have a soul level's worth of souls on you. You'll find new armour, new rings, new equipment and whilst I don't think you should study a walkthrough, ask us, ask the community and pay attention to messages. 8/10 times they'll be lying about the "Illusionary walls ahead" but the rest of the time it's worth listening to. Just don't trust them if they say an area's safe... just not worth it in my opinion.
Speaking of carrying a Soul Level's worth of souls, use a homeward bone if you're carrying a big stack of souls, don't take the chance, and remember not to panic if you die with a good amount of souls on you. That's the worst thing you can do. You'll be bored, you'll be tired and you'll be afraid of losing them so you'll rush in, die and regret it. Be patient, be cautious and if you're having trouble, make a plan, it'll be worth your while.
If you're looking for specific advice on what weapons and armour for what build, once again, ask the community, or ask me personally. But you need to know yourself what you're going for. The one problem I'd argue there is with DS is that you really need to stick to a certain character type to make it. No switching between Dragon Tooth and Katanas. So that means it's important to - once again - make mistakes and die a lot. Try fat rolling and tanking, try flip rolling with daggers, see what works for you, then ask us "I want to be X fast, but am dying too quickly. Here are my stats" and we'll help you out, or you can even use a build calculator if you really like.
Every time you die, you don't get closer to hollowing, you get closer to winning. Every obstacle might seem large, but in time you'll feel silly for worrying. Play smart, play curious, and play it for the long game and you'll be fine mate.
But, that's just me, what do the rest of you think? Anything I got wrong? Anything to add?
