Ren was shot somewhere in the lower torso by an enraged Wookiee from great distance. Surely, a grievous wound, but it's the kind that would take a while to kill a person, especially if the bowcaster shot cauterized the wound. (I'm aware that Bowcasters fire actual metal projectiles, but they're also energized and therefore, likely hot enough to cause similar heat damage to a blaster bolt). Considering the angle, the shot may have even missed vital organs, or just grazed them. The energy behind the shot would certainly still cause plenty of damage, however.

The Loyal Trooper, on the other hand, was shot by the very same Wookiee when he was much less emotional and therefore much more focused on proper aim, and the projectile impacted somewhere on his middle to upper back / chest. Much more likely to cause severe damage to the heart, lungs, or spine.

There wasn't just "some soot on his armor", he was shot clean through the upper chest by a metal rod charged with plasma.

Or the much more logical assumption that Kylo Ren wears good ass armor instead of the crappy shit that they give stormtroopers.

Sorry to have to be the one to tell you, but literally everything in your belly area is damn important organs, if you pierce them then shit will be going on inside you fast, not shit you can move around, fight for 20 min, punch constantly and then just dont give a fuck
