I've only played a little bit of Paper Mario and seen very little of Cave Story.

Up until yesterday I was wondering what Undertale and the hype was all about, and doubtfully started to play it. Now I can't stop recommending it.

Pretty much the same with me. I didn't even know what it was besides that a ton of people liked it and thought it was just some webcomic or something. Finally checked it out and watched the peaceful playthrough. The music that played during the walk to the last boss when all the monsters are telling about the first human made me want to tear up I gotta play it

It's 10$ on steam I think. You can torrent it, but please don't do that, it's definitely worth the money. The game starts quite slowly, and the old-school feel might put some people off, but if you don't care about that, or like it, go for it. I recommend you to watch the trailer and nothing more, the best way to play this is to know nothing of it, as even a little information about it can spoil major parts of the game.

Hmmm, well then it would probably be a bullet hell with rpg elements and an amazing set of characters, a story that can build suspense, and an amazing soundtrack. Your choices also have heavy impacts on the game, so much so that 1 playthrough can affect your next.
