Key word "zones" as in, you can have any sort of legal firearm directly outside said "zones"

no, see, having a gun outside the school ENABLES shooting inside the school
since you can bring it from the legal zone, to the illegal zone
what you need is a complete ban on owning a gun for no reason
and "self defence" is not a reason.
you don't need a gun for self defence, if other people don't have guns.

You think we should ban firearms for 'no reason'? Since it can be hotly argued whether self-defense is sufficient reason to carry a weapon, why don't we start with something that indisputably has no use. Say alcohol. What is the use of beer, whine, vodka, etc. except intoxication? We don't need it, right? There are other drinks that taste good, and don't impair your judgement, depth perception, and so on. So lets put a national ban on liquor.
Wait a second, wasn't that the goal of prohibition? And that worked really well, didn't it?

noone else has the gun porblems 'murrica has, except of cause lawless states such as somalia and afghanistan, but i don't really think first world countries can be reasonably compared with third world ones.
the only differences on the gun-front between USA and other first world countries are as follows:
1. you let anyone have a gun for no reason
2. you have large gun-crime problem
see, at this point, anyone past 4th grade should be able to deduce that one is the cause of the other, but apparently, the majority of americans don't see this.
this makes me deduce that the majority of americans are brainwashed morons.
and you're one of them.
brainwashed morons aren't really my favorite conversation partners, so c ya, i've got porn to watch and games to play.

According to a series of studies in 2010:
-Guns in America were used in self-defense over 80 times more often than in a murder, suicide, accident, etc.
-While the U.S. rates number 1 in gun ownership by nation, it is actually #103 in homicides. The 9 European countries with the lowest gun ownership rate have a combined murder rate 3 times that of the 9 European countries with the highest gun ownership.
-In the United Kingdom recorded violent attacks jumped 77% in the decade following the banning of privately owned firearms.
-FBI crime statistics have found that states with concealed carry allowances have a marked lower rate of murders, rapes, assaults, and armed robberies.
-Every U.S. mass-shooting since 1950, with one exception, has been in a 'gun-free zone'.
-In the early 80s a town in Georgia passed a law requiring each head of household to own at least one gun. The crime rate dropped almost 90%.
-A study published by the Harvard Journal of Law found a distinct connotation between gun ownership and violent crime: The more gun-owning citizens a country has, the fewer violent crimes are committed.
The facts are black and white: An armed citizenry reduces crime and saves lives. I won't resort to insults because I don't need to. Anyone can look up these kinds of studies, and they all say the same thing. If you still refuse to believe them, that is your choice. I for one are glad you are not a U.S. citizen, because we have too many like you already who refuse to listen to facts and logic.

Australia is extremely isolated, the US has an open border with a corrupt shithole, pretending that these two countries are in any way similar is just silly. Just sayin.
