I just think physique and reproductive role is a better way of defining sex. In which case, I would refer to someone as a woman if they did change their reproductive organ and body's hormones.

At the same time, I think that transexuals are such a minority that it really doesn't matter and it would probably be appropriate even to just refer to them as transexuals, separate from male and female. And when it comes to using gender-based language (he/her) it really won't kill me to just use what they prefer. Not that I think it's an obligation, but we can be polite even if we disagree with their views and choices.

If you want to get biological, sex chromosomes only have as much to do with sex as the affect they have on the body.

If you nullify everything a sex chromosome does by taking drugs and altering your body, you have effectively changed gender. Many animals don't have a sex chromosome, and these hormones are affected by other things like climate and social conditions. There's no disputing that certain lizards can change genders even though their chromosomes are not altered, yet when a human does it, that changes something?
