because of wind, but it's not as stupid of an answer as you'd think.
because mars has a load of dust in the thin atmosphere and because it5's thing there is barely any wind NASA predicted the solar panels that power Spirit to be fully blocked after about 4~5 months. but on mars there are many dust devils shooting across the surface(gif). these mini whirlwinds crossed the path of Spirit quite often clearing the solar panels, thus generating power for Spirit to continue.

it's the perfect example of things going better than expected.

there are computers now which can tell similarities between two pictures.
#127 - crackboots (04/30/2012) [-]
true, but they use immense computing power to do so, while the human brain effortlessly does this every single second of the day while performing a myriad of other tasks (such as walking, breathing, digesting etcetc). they're fundamentally different.

brains "store" concepts and they recall it when the same concept is seen, "1" doesn't require more brain power than "car" or "face".

the computer does everything mathematically, every single things a computer does is an algorithm of binary maths(good example is the codes for colors like ######f etc). a computer is a translating device if you will:
the input of visual and audial data is translated to binary sequences via a certain scheme, sent to another computer which takes the binary and translates it back according to the scheme again. a computer doesn't have a concept of language, we just program it to light certain pixels according to a certain scheme.

brains and computers can perform certain similar tasks(although trough a different method). if you'd make a venn diagram of it, it'd look somewhat like this (very crude aproximation).

what makes it even more sad is that it acts autonomously. it takes 4 minutes to send a signal and another 4 to get a response, using remote control could end up with the rover falling off a cliff because we'd be to late to see it. the rover was "conscious" (i'm using the term VERY loosely).

would anyone also want to know why it operated over 200 times as long as expected?

earth sends message to intellegent life on planet 500 light years away
planet receives message and translates it (assuming they can)
sends back message saying "HELP US!"
we get message, and send a message saying "What's wrong?"
10 years later, the planet explodes to make room for intergalactic highway
MFW we send a message to a dead planet

This phenomenon is caused by peoples expectations being far higher than the content you are showing them.
"LOLLOLLLLOLL GUYZ!! WATCH THIS SOOOO FUNNY!"
So they are expecting it to be the funniest thing they have ever watched making their expectations of how funny it will be far higher than the actual video, to solve this problem, simply say "watch this video" and nothing else, if it is as funny as you believe it to be they will laugh harder than if you encourage them.

The same effect is seen when someone tells their friend "it was the best movie ever".
they get higher expectations for the movie than it deserved and makes it worse for them to watch.

yeah, i stopped arguing.
people on fj just don't get that
1, just because they wouldn't do something doesn't mean it's retarded.
2, they're doing the exact same thing something else.

ignorant people aren't the problem, the problem is they crowd together making their collective ignorance look like legitimate intelligence.
