This response actually made me look at my AP Literature book more than any other time this school year.

Technically, Roy can be counted as a Main Character from Fullmetal Alchemist (More-so however in Brotherhood). In FMA:B, Roy Mustang can be counted as a "Hero" or "the good guy who opposes the bad guy". These are the characters that the show intends us to want to emulate, and are usually characterized as being Larger than life, stronger/better than most humans beings, and almost God-like. That is a standard definition of a hero. Which can also be counted as a Main Character.

However, Roy does not always seem so clear cut, sometimes he doesn't seem to be the good guy, and so we can use the more neutral and older terms, such as Protagonist and Antagonist. As Roy Mustang is against Father, he is a protagonist, much like Edward and Al. Protagonists can be considered a main character.

Now if you are thinking "So what? Near the end nearly everyone was against Father, so is everyone a main character?" then no. But the addition that Roy also fits the description of a Major Character directs otherwise. A major character is defined as one that is seen more frequently, is quite complex, and seem more "realistic" than the minor characters which are more flat and not really examined much. An example of minor would be Buccaneer. We are told almost nothing of his past, and while he was helpful in the blinding of Wrath's ultimate sight, he was never seen in too much depth, despite his honourable end. Of this, it seems that Buccaneers character is a bit flat, making him a minor character. Roy's character is one of change and unpredictability. No one predicted the burning of "Maria Ross", and this makes him a Dynamic character.

As of this, it can be argued that Roy Mustang is indeed a major character of FMA:B and more a lesser character in the original, while still possibly a major character. It is these points that I find Roy to be a main character of the series.

I was referring to him being the main protagonist. Ed and Al are, and since the question was asking for the Main Character the Elric's make more sense.

True, and after looking at the wiki for a split second to see if they count him as a main character, they labeled him as, the Tritagonist. Knowing the definition of Protagonist, im sure you know what that means.

yes he is the third person that is important to the storyline but I feel that I like ling a bit more than Mustang.

Ling was an interesting character. He wasn't my favorite (Maes Hughes), but i do like his huge appetite, quick movements, and overall badassery.

I feel lingreed was the most entertaining and fun characters in the show, but you know who wouldn't know that, Maes Hughes

He was a fun character before and after the transfusion with Greed.

Liked Maes Hughes because they just made him too likeable that you knew something bad was going to happen to him, but you certainly wished they wouldn't show it.
