Yes and no, the original FMA followed the manga up until the halfway point then had to make up the rest because the manga wasn't that far yet, whereas Brotherhood followed the manga the entire way through, so there are some similarities throughout maybe the first half or so of the series (with a few slight differences here and there), and then they both split off in almost completely different directions past their halfway points.

As for quality/enjoyment, it's all a matter of opinion, but the vast majority of people prefer Brotherhood, myself included.

It's the actual story from the manga.

The other FMA anime is a completely dfferent story, with just the same characters.

"Bryan Konietzko conceived her as a Hollywood Golden Age actress in the Avatar World, with her hair inspired by Rita Hayworth.[14] Although having designed her before watching the anime series Fullmetal Alchemist, Bryan Konietzko stated he was fine with saying that Asami's design was influenced by Lust and is flattered by the fact that people would think so, as "Lust is such a killer design".[15] He did, however, say that he used Lust's lipstick color for Asami.[14]"

the first few episodes were the same because the manga wasn't going fast enough for the anime, so when the anime writers broke off into a different story line brotherhood continued on the original story. Brotherhood followed the manga.
