Yeah I can imagine. Just having a group of imaginative people with a ruleset can be the best thing in the world

Your final act is to kill the mysterious woman leading the rebellion against your utopian empire. You fight through her minions and triumph in a crazy boss fight against the rebellion's most elite champions, a subordinate gives you a bunker-busting charge to place on the heavy, sealed door of the final room in the underground base. You detonate the charge, only to find that the blast killed the rebellion's leader - your beloved wife. Shocked by this revelation, you slowly stagger out of the complex, your loyal soldiers giving you odd, confused looks.

For the first time, you start to notice little details about your men you never picked up on before. Their uniforms, they're decorated with high kill counts, images of bloodied skulls or fists. Their weapons are sophisticated, powerful, and most of all, vicious, more than anybody would ever need to subdue largely unarmored rebels. What was a handful of sergeants dutifully arresting surrendering rebels now appear to be audibly chuckling as they savagely beat unarmed men and women.

When you emerge from the base through a sewer entrance and out into an open square, the commercial center of the city you built in this shining new era, things again stand out that simply didn't seem to be there when you entered the sewers. That line of people waiting for delicious, healthy food from a great fast food stand don't look happy, their thousand-yard stares looking hopefully toward the mostly-broth soup being handed out by some generous charity workers.

Your riot police fire electrifying stun grenades into crowds of curious onlookers instead of yelling at them to stand back as they were before. You look up, the largest screen in the plaza catching your eye, and you don't remember your expression being so severe, so ghoulish, when you recorded that address to the public. You look angry, filled with a frothing rage you are trying and failing to convey as righteous indignation.

You feel sick, and you wonder if it isn't because you're breathing in air that looks damn near brown. Everything seems to be turning darker, uglier, yet clearer instead of duller.

You thought you were the hero. You thought you were making difficult choices, but the right ones. You thought this game had a stylish, minimalist aesthetic, but as these details start to flood into your perception, filling in all the deep, dark holes of what you've done, you realize you were just too focused on the big picture. The small cruelties your broad strokes left behind went beneath your notice. You were the villain all along.

I didn't find it confusing... Seemed pretty obvious when it was a flashback and not. basically it's the people she was madly in love with before and stuff.
