| No one thinks like the two people in those pictures. Felons who are not rehabilitated but instead have harsh punishments laid on them (IN EITHER INSTANCE) almost always return to crime. This issue isn't as simple as finding the "correct" punishment, its about treating felons like human beings. | ||

| There is exactly ZERO psychiatric help that could recover you from 1000 years trapped in your own mind. You would be beyond help by year 150, by year 500, you probably wouldn't even be sentient anymore. No one thinks like the two people in those pictures. | 1000 years in a jail cell would drive you insane, I guarantee it. yes, but that's the point of going to jail: as a punishment. The prison could have some sort of psychiatric help for post-sentence criminals. I'd rather go insane in a jail cell for 8 hours, rather that go insane in a jail cell for the rest of my life, simply rotting away. That way, prisoners can understand what true punishment is, and they can become functioning members of society after their sentence is over. anon (11/14/2015) [-] I think it was 2008 (?) There were a few knife crime incidents in the UK that were close together. It was a slow summer for news so The Sun and The Daily Mirror, and to an extent the rest of the British papers ran stories about knife crimes, going into quite a lot of detail about specific cases. They got lucky and a couple more attacks happened soon after, so they began claiming it was a knife crime epidemic sweeping the nation. Meanwhile the government were crying at them to stop because after trying to lower knife crime incidents for the last few years they were actually statistically down for the period. In fact while knives might have replaced blunt instruments (like hammers) as the most common weapon of assault violent assaults with weapons were down that year. Most knives involved in attacks were hastily grabbed kitchen knives. That's how I remember it without looking it up and doing any further fact checking anyway. #30 -
anon (11/14/2015) [-] www.mirror.co.uk/news/uk-news/daily-mirrors-stop-knives-save-353749 news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/7627432.stm www.theguardian.com/uk/2008/sep/21/knifecrime.facebook Oh and the police had a knife amnesty where people could go and turn in knives at the police station, no questions asked. they weren't after the kitchen knives of course, they wanted the ones people carried that weren't for a trade but rather so they had the option of stabbing someone. I think the law in the UK is something along the lines of being allowed to carry a knife no longer than 2" in public unless you have a reason (being a carpenter going to work or something like that.) | ||
