No one has a right to have their feelings protected by the government. Minorities are not an exception. The difference between incitement and merely hateful/offensive speech should be clear enough that we don't need to lump them into one category. Causing offense should not be considered a real harmful consequence, as far as the state is concerned. preventing ill-informed political incorrect opinions isnt merely about hurting someones feelings, and this isnt purely about minorities either. there have been minority groups who have been arrested for trying to encourage attacks on white majorities in some cases, and its a good thing that their freedom of speech had been taken away otherwise something bad could have happened. harmful, ill-informed information should not automatically be protected just because it offends people and others get a kick out of it, the right should be taken away if it is being used to promote hate or attacks on groups (from misleading information) regardless of whether people find it offensive or not. There are problems with this. First of all, to give the government the right to censor "ill-informed" speech is to imply that the government has a monopoly on truth. This is wrong and very dangerous. The government's run by people, too. They might be better-informed than the average person, but they are not infallible fonts of wisdom and they are not all morally pure. How much power will you give them? It seems clear you think it should be illegal to spread racist propaganda, but should it also be illegal to claim vaccines cause autism? To deny climate change? To preach false religions? To stir up anger against the government? You should see where this is going. Such a power could easily be used for selfish or political purposes, and even well-intentioned uses of this power could constitute misuse if the government's official point of view is wrong or disputed. Secondly, free speech is a natural right. Being ignorant or having wrong beliefs is a person's individual right as well. To criminalize these sorts of things is in itself a human rights violation, as well as an unjust overreach of government authority. Again, incitement to violence already is and should be illegal, but expressing ill-informed or even hateful opinions is not the same thing as inciting violence and that should be clear. A society in which strict censorship and authoritarian speech control is needed to restrain people from killing each other is not a civilized society. And when I was talking about offending minorities, I was referencing the Pew Poll results conisnon posted, which clearly ask whether government should prevent speech offensive to minorities, not speech that incites violence against minorities. #111 -
