I figured i was getting a free ride because on the paperwork they thought i was black, and they had circled the race section in red sharpie so it was just a subtle hint.
Colleges have to have a certain quota of individuals of certain races, if they fall below that number or percentage then they get fines or lose perks. Colleges with mostly white kids will invite African american students to attend for free to diversify their student base. Colleges established specifically for blacks have to have a few token white guys to avoid being labeled a racist school

The money to happiness line plataeus. Obviously you can point to someone who doesn't even have the money to wipe his own ass, but that doesn't mean the rich are exponentially happier than we are. That's why when I see someone complaining about their job not paying enough, I ask if they're at least making enough to sustain themselves. It's not to say "YOU SHOULD BE HAPPY WITH WHAT YOU HAVE!" but to try and keep them from being pissed off at everything just because their job isnt making them Oprah-rich.

Very true. my mother says she lives like a queen compared to how she did in mexico, with only a 40k income with my step dad. speaking of that friend who is going to Wisconsin, she doesn't think 100k is a lot of money...i wanted to slap the shit out of her lol. Granted she hasn't had a lot of time in this country (she is chinese) to really get the value of what a dollar is, but she believes she SHOULD, as if entitled, to at least 80k by the age of 25. I should note she was given the choice by her parents to study law medicine or engineering, so she chose engineering. One could say she chose the one she hated the least, but she definitely has money as her main motivation.

The reasons you go to school and persue your careers are your own problem, but when you're a bitter sad sack contemplating suicide each day because you went to school for the money instead of your passion, don't look at me. That's what my roommate is doing. I understand being forced into getting a job because it's what will make you enough money to live, but your ultimate goal should be what makes your life meaningful.

Why are you going to school?
User avatar #267 - comandante (07/09/2014) [-]
Very true. well i tell people the same thing, i really don't like anything else. I thought and still think engineering is pretty cool, and they make good money. But IMO if you are contemplating suicide because you chose engineering, he should probably do it. Engineering allows you to study subjects which basically explains to you how the universe and things around you work. Its great pay, you can be very useful to the future of science and tech. The money doesn't equal happiness thing is bullshit, like i said, talk to someone who grew up poor and ask if their are crying in a corner because they didn't "fulfill their dreams" They are too busy enjoying a great career and being able to give all they can back to their families. Not many people can go to school, nor can read, its all attitude, and sorry but your friend is not seeing the beauty and absolute luck he is able to attend school,

you lost me at "Michael Moore"
User avatar #183 - comandante (07/09/2014) [-]
Pretty stupid of you to be "lost" I see michael moore for his extreme bias as well, but you can't throw away a simple yet important experience from someone that we can observe simply because you have a negative opinion of said person. Moore explaining how his dad supported his family has nothing to do with his ideologies. For example I hate hitler, yet his leadership skills were superb and are being studying in psychological and leadership courses today.

Because the motivation to join a STEM career is that you want to make a difference, or that it's your passion and that the money is just a bonus. If excessive wealth is all you're after, learning how to count cards at a casino is leagues easier than plowing through the necessary schooling to be an engineer/scientist...

My roommate only got his engineering degree because he expects it to make him a millionaire within a year outside of college. He's good at it, don't get me wrong, but he's a gigantic sadsack from the truth in the matter being that he'll be lucky to break 100k a year within 5 years.

One of my other friends has turned down a dozen or so jobs because they're not "lucrative enough". The guy wants to be fixing lightbulbs on the space station RIGHTNOW! He's got the same prob;em as my roommate above.

I'm studying what I love, and while I have my ultimate goal of world domination, so long as what I do is in that field, I'm happy. As for money, I only care if I can pay to not die of starvation, or exposure. It's why I hear all of this shit about "fast food workers not deserving high wages" and all I can think is "Why the fuck do YOU care what other people make?"
User avatar #176 - comandante (07/09/2014) [-]
I was hoping someone would not bring up "do it for the love of it" excuse. I used to think everyone thought like that in stem fields. I attend miami dade, arguably one of the largest community college, and if i have learned anything, people are not spending 40k because "I like it and its my passion" bullshit. My friend is going to be getting loaned 40k by going to Wisconisin-Madison, her family makes less than 20k i year, i would love to see somewhere scold her for the fact she does not care what she is studying, she wants to make money. Meet people who come from haiti, from cuba, who have NOTHING, and try to tell them their basis for attending school is bullshit. This is the REAL world, and college to some is to follow passions and dreams. But college is a BUSINESS, and its not evil or horrible to see it as an investment., i really can't say it anything Why do i care what other people make? Because, it undermines the value of entry level positions in stem fields as well as other careers. It is a spit in the face to my friends who are studying, who left their countries and familes, who work 30 hours a week while juggling 6 classes, All 2.5k mostly paid by them. Meet people who come from true poverty, they study science because they love it, but make no mistake, they are their to make a future for themselves. Sorry for long response or any mistakes
