The reason why early lifters need to do compounds isn't because they'll get more gains, but it's more natural body movements and will make your muscles durable and strong, isolation exercises are much less healthy than compound.
But seeing as how you're in the situation that you're in I wouldn't worry about doing weighted anything. Do bodyweight exercises.

Do these every other day and afterwards eat eggs and drink milk. After you've completed them your joints will be strong enough to add weight.

If your leg hurts like that, you probably got hurt at some point. No quad exercise will be painless until you are healed.

Bodyweight squats are another good exercise though. Just don't do any until your leg is better.

There's no need for people who are beginner lifters to be doing isolation exercises.
Squats are key

Dude, i can't squat WITHOUT weight. I know compound movements are the best, but i need to be able to actually DO them, which i can't. Try spending the next two years spending 18 hours of the day on a bed, and the rest in a chair, see what that will do to your joints and muscles. I can't squat 10 lbs, i have tried, my knees snap. I have heard people saying "hey don't worry, when i started i could barely squat the bar" Bitch i can barely squat air lmfao. I refuse to quit though, and not everyone does compound movements, and they still make gains, just a little slower. My goal is to be able to just do the big compounds, but I can't RIGHT NOW at least. I am doing dumbell press, and i am slowly snapping everything into place to lift more weight. Everyone is different dude, im know my limits and im just not there yet.

Leg extensions are no good. If you don't believe me, ask any reputable trainer or physical therapist about it, and they'll tell you how easily it can mess your knees up.

Anyways, chances are you did the lunges a bit off. I would recommend resting your thigh so you don't make it worse, but you can start with just slow, non-weighted lunges if you want.

Source? I've always been told that leg extensions are awesome, especially for taller lifters with longer levers like me. I've done them for 5 sets of 10 with around 300 pounds for a long time with no problems.

My stepfather is a physical therapist. When he started coming to the gym with me, he pointed out that leg extensions are bad for your knees. From that point I asked basically anybody who would know around the offices, as well as all of my football coaches and athletic trainers I've worked with, and they all said the same thing.

He even mentions patellar tendonitis, which I definitely had problems with when I was doing leg extensions consistently.

I just looked it up on a site I go to and really trust, I was hoping they'd back me up with saying that it isn't as bad as thought, but they actually claimed it's pretty bad too. Although the thing they did mention was the if you are going to do it, do it at a quick pace (which is how I was taught to do it and it's how I do it).

i did try doing a weightless lunge, it STILL hurt like a bitch. What kind of exercises can i do do work out my quads, were i can increment the weight, to say, only 20 lbs, until i am able to lunge 180 lbs of fat mexican.
