Well, yes, that's the gist of what I said. Just like higher education isn't supposed to make you a craftsman that knows his trade and nothing else, but rather a person who is educated in many fields
User avatar #68 - collegedood (06/23/2014) [-]
By higher education you mean college and trade school? I respectfully disagree.
I am studying engineering and mathematics and yes I am trained in many fields and I will probably only use 10% of what I have learned but the 10% of what I have learned I need to be proficient at because if I am not a bridge will collapse, an airplane will have a malfunction, or a ceiling will collapse and people die.
So yes, I especially believe higher education is meant to make you a craftsman of your trade. I agree high school should be a more round about education but they should have more real world education than they currently have.

I know how the complex numbers work I have a maths degree... but I didn't understand what you were writing. e^( i * 3pi/4 ) = i/sqrt(2)-1/sqrt(2) (note the minus) because cos(3*Pi/4) = -1/sqrt(2).
Let me guess, you're an engineer?
User avatar #94 - collegedood (06/15/2014) [-]
yes that was a typo on my part.
I am a student studying engineering, math, and a minor in computer science. So yeah.
But still, complex numbers can be written either rectangular or polar and that is why e^i*pi = 0*i-1.

What do you mean by 'it is actually converted to -1'? What planes are you talking about? Clarify, please.
User avatar #88 - collegedood (06/15/2014) [-]
the complex plane. where the real number line (..., -2, -1, 0, 1, 2, ...) x axis and the complex number line (..., -2i, -i, 0, i, 2i, 3i, ...) is the y axis.
a*e^(i*b) are polar coordinates where a is the magnitude ( 2e^(i*pi) = -2 ) and b is the angle (e^( i * 3pi/4 ) = i/sqrt(2)+1/sqrt(2) i think, it's been a while)
-1 is rectangular coordinates which take the form ai+b where a is the complex magnitude (up or down on the y axis) and b is the real magnitude (left or right on x axis) This is seen by my second example and for my first example the extended form would be 2e^(i*pi) = 0*i - 2.
It is a hell of a lot easier to explain this with pictures
For polar coordinates, imagine the unit circle from trigonometry because it is essentially the same idea

Every cross section is stationary and every midpoint between the two sections is double hinged. I could 3D print a smaller model, a crappier looking one out of wood, or a heavier one out of metal.
Shit is simple.
