What you're describing is taste, however the problem with video games are that they're an interactive art medium, hence there are obviously gonna be tiers of how well a certain person can play the piece of entertainment which opens people up to ridicule, especially from people who put more time and effort into engaging with the medium.

You don't see people saying "Yeah! I'm the best at appreciating art! Suck my dick!" or after watching an episode of How I met your mother, someone comes in and screams "You suck at watching this! I fucked your mom!"

I'm okay with people calling themselves gamers because I don't really care what they call themselves. I play games almost every day, hell, I plan to make a living out of making games, I personally don't run around calling myself that because I'm not into the whole "I'm this, you're that!" thing because at the end of the day people like what they like, and you shouldn't give a fuck what that is.

On top of that (more in relation to the content, as opposed to your comment) does a person have to look or act a certain way to enjoy something avidly, just because someone's a professional footballer, an actor or a comedian doesn't suddenly make them "Not a gamer"

ANYONE that enjoys games in any way, shape or form can call themselves a gamer.

I'll clarify, the series has been going downhill a bit in my opinion probably because of publishers pushing for a new release every year, and the fact that the game (again, in my opinion) handles, and controls so well that I think they're afraid to take away or add too much of their winning formula, think about it, it sells millions of copies every single year, it shifts millions of pre-orders by just being "Call of Duty - XXXXX" mostly because people expect it to be very similar to what they're used to. Sure it might not be super innovative and use real time physics the way Crytek are working on, Sure it's not got huge crowds to maneuver through the way Hitman and Assassins Creed do, but it's easy to pick up and play for 5-10 minutes at a time for people about to leave for work, or for people that just want to jump in and shoot some shit before they have to meet with a partner or friend, it's why games like Angry Birds are so popular too, it's something you don't really need to commit to and you can still have a ton of fun doing.

It does get better. But don't expect the show to pull you into the T.V. It's a great show but if you resist and try to say it's lame then you might not have a good of an experience.
