but my point is that if a few people liked MLP for what is that's fine. But there's nothing extraordinary about the show itself that justifies such an incredible following of such a specific demographic. For example, by the logic that "it provides an escape" why wouldn't spongebob have a massive following of teenagers and grown men? And if there does exist such a group, why are they so much less vocal than the MLP fandom?

TLDR: MLP has some unique qualities that have earned it an adult fanbase that other kids shows don't have, and I'm sorry some bronies are dicks.

It's kinda hard to say, actually, as "it just happens there is". Everyone is in for their own reasons. But I believe it mainly has to do with the spirit-lifting, light-hearted, colourful and creative universe that is the settings of the show. It's a very specific and accessible style, which opens a lot of doors on creativity. You got fan-made artwork, stories, music, episodes - anything you can think of - because it sets so many foundations upon which you can build new things.
The issue with the "loud" vocal part of the community is, I believe, simply attention-whoring - at least most of the time. You'll get more attention (negative attention, but attention-whores do not care about that) if you go on about a "show for little girls" than you'd get if you went on about a show like Spongebob. But this is by no means representative of the community.
Like with any other passion, most "regular" fans will just mention the show on occasion, and will not ramble about it every 5 minutes if you do not share that passion. If I like football but you don't, and I keep telling you all about these "awesome matches" and "kick-ass goals" and "unfair fouls" and on and on, of course you'll get irritated. But that doesn't mean every football fan is like that.
