Consider the following:

An automatic weapon typically goes through a 30 round mag in 4-5 seconds. You can blow through hundreds of rounds in minutes.

With a semi auto weapon, 1 trigger pull = 1 round fired, so you have to make your shots count (more so, at least).

So a shooter with a semi auto weapon may actually kill more people than a shooter with an automatic (assuming both have the same number of rounds).

Note that I'm by no means advocating anything, it's just food for thought really.
