The Cell or Freiza ending would have been more satisfying than Goku ditching his family to train with some foreign kid.
imo the ending of the Cell Saga is the best ending for the series, but shit it just won't fucking die no matter how many times it's killed.
Its actually both. He originally wanted to end it with Frieza, but was easily convinced to keep going. After coming up with another satisfying ending and leaving the possibility of continuing with Gohan open, he was more forcibly convinced to do another saga when producers found that Gohan was not as popular.
nope frezia saga was the original ending. thats why every main bad guy after that basically came out of nowhere. androids? not built yet. cell? came from the future. Buu? sealed away.
Well, in the same fashion, Frieza and the Saiyans came out of nowhere as well. They literally fell from the sky on Goku and the others.
In reality, it was more likely that Toriyama didn't really plan arcs ahead of time. He's said it himself - he'd write a chapter "in the moment", which is why he would forget earlier plot points, and is also why arcs seem to be very concerned about immediate goals (i.e. fights) with little focus on larger goals beyond "beat this one guy eventually".
I think Cell Saga makes sense as an "end" for DBZ, but I enjoyed all of it so I guess all's well ends well.
I remember hearing that he didn't plan on Dragonball being such a huge success and didn't intend to continue it past the first saga and pretty much every arc since that first one was pretty much just him riding the wave with very little forethought regarding what would come after the arc he was currently working on.
Yep, Toriyama doesn't give a shit. Like in the Buu saga, he stated that the martial arts tournament had already started publishing by the time he even came up with the concept of Buu.
- To be fair, he does murder that mecha super hard.
