Yeah i watched the anime then started the manga from scratch. Holy shit do they tone it down in the anime. Guts seems a lot more one dimensional in the anime relative to the manga but I can understand why they'd cut it out. Then again they did have the anime end of a uh 'interesting' note so if they could show that im not sure why they'd have to cut out other parts that are integral to guts' development.

He did go through quite a lot of character development in the Lost Children Arc. Specifically when it came to the faire obsessed girl, and how he ultimately killed her best childhood friend. Not to mention the apostle Faust plot and dealing with his daughter.

Also in the manga, Puck arrives a lot sooner than what this reboot is giving us. So honestly I wouldn't be surprised to see more out of character situations during this anime adaptation.

In the episode it shows him in quite a bit of shock. While Guts is one certifiable badass that can handle pain, he still was caught off guard. Probably even angry at himself for hesitating to strike the possessed corpse the moment he saw it.

Yeah which is one of the stranger parts in the anime, cos very early on in the manga, like way before this episode was set, Guts was already in the mind set of not giving a shit. I could be wrong, but I dont remember any scenes in the manga where Guts was that hesitant, they make a show of him just going in. Theres even parts where they're like "you cant fight that shit, that thing literally is known to have fought and won hundreds of wars singlehand- oh youre already fighting him". And for the sword thing cos i realise i didnt address it. Even the characters in the series are like "wtf, thats way too big". The black smith is like "I made big sword, no one should wield it, its dangerous as fuck, and i doubt anyone could use it." and guts kinda walks out of the shed with it and hes like, "well, thats kinda fucked up."

I'd say from the anime right now, it seems like theres been some re writes or at least a new character direction so people would sympathise with Guts a bit, which makes sense. The whole thing of why people sympathise with him they completely skipped and turfed it to be a few scenes in the opening.
