we're on the same page then. lot of people on here look at threads like this and if they see somebody that sounds like they know saying its okay, some kid that has never really lifted and doesn't know any better might go try it and get hurt. As far as starting with his back just watch in slow motion and he begins pushing up top at the very beginning of his rep, he's pushing up to overcompensate the plate-style machine vs a barbell. that's where the unnecessary back stress comes in to play
User avatar #104 - clannadqs (10/23/2014) [-]
I see what you're referring to, but I'm just saying his is the best one on this comp, in my opinion. I also see what your point is about new guys going out and maybe trying this, but I don't believe anyone is that stupid. Most people do their research before heading to the gym for the first time and don't go outside of their limits. Normally stages to progression from a new lifter as well:

1. Starts with curling and bench for almost a year
2. Realize that was stupid and add some machines for lower body
3. Realize that was stupid and start doing proper free weight lifts, but light
4. Get more into it and hopefully has proper form.

Haha, I've hardly ever seen anyone come flying into the gym their first time and say,"Yo mane, I want to hit up dat lower back and legs."

last thing i will say about it. stand and go through your usual GM process. Good form straight back slow motion good stretch etc. then I want you to duplicate what this jackhole is doing in his video. bend quickly to about 20-30 degrees in your hamstrings and jolt up pressing through your upper body bringing your core and legs in as a second thought. If those two actions feel the same to you something is wrong..

at the same time something that may just cause slight overuse over time can also end up with somebody throwing their back out first try. Lift as you will I do not judge but don't preach poor form and stuff people just randomly make up like the misuse of this legpress as "okay" or "something everybody does" because it halfway resembles a lift done in a different environment.
User avatar #102 - clannadqs (10/23/2014) [-]
I think you're confusing me for someone who is promoting this man. I, in no way, promote using machines at all. The leg press is bad even if it is used properly.

"isn't something to worry about immediately" - if you're ever doing a lift and this is your thought pattern that's a problem son. think about your angles between these two lifts you are comparing. during your good morning you are keeping a flat back, lowering slowly to get the most of your stretch, and then raising using your glutes hams and lower back to keep everything straight. What this guy is doing is lowering quickly and then raising first with his upper back THEN following through with his core. watch it slowly, his initial push is with his upper body and he is not returning to full standing position as you would with your good mornings. form is not always gonna be perfect but this guy is in no way getting the benefits of an "improvised GM"
User avatar #98 - clannadqs (10/23/2014) [-]
That's not my thought process. I know how to lift man. Hopefully I will be able to compete by the end of next year, but due to being in the National Guard I have to devote a portion of my year to cardio for an APFT (test). What I meant from "isn't something to worry about immediately" was a direct response to those that are freaking out and saying," One wrong move and snap". That won't happen and you know it. I'm pretty open about it man, I don't agree with what he is doing, but if he is only doing this once a week there will be no injury until he gets older and by that point he probably won't be doing GMs. I also am confused on how you think you can initiate the lift from the bottom with your upper back with the angles he has. Like I have said, he doesn't have perfect form here and I would correct him if he was doing this with me, but he is not initiating coming back up with only his upper back. That would be almost impossible and I would love for you to do only one GM with how his back is positioned and claim you started coming back up with mostly your upper back. I agree with you though, he isn't getting the proper benefits from doing a GM because it isn't free weight, he is going light, and he doesn't have proper form, but my original point was this was the probably the only one on the comp that didn't make me entirely cringe. Another thing to add to this, don't do GMs like the girl in the photo either. If you want a proper GM without having to worry about changing direction (which is bad for you the heavier you go) then set the safety bars up on the rack to the height you would normally change directions at and start from the bottom. That's what I do when I do GMs. I start from the rack, stand up, set it back down. This way I can go much heavier and start with proper form. It's normally what Powerlifters do.

That's the point. I've gotten some weird looks from new lifters when I do these and I know they probably just got off of /fit/ and think they know everything. In real life with a bar it looks like a squat gone wrong and it can make you feel pretty shitty when others think you are legit struggling with 225 with "improper" form.

Kind of gay as I didn't believe I would be posting here that much. I just chose a name I could remember if I needed to log in and it just happened to be my Xbox Live gamertag which is Clannad Qs (I was a ranked 1v1er back in the day).
