Latinos/Hispanics are about half-indigenous, half-European. But they are descended from tribes who lived south of the Rio Grande. One could argue that the United States belongs to the North American Indians, since they lived there first. The same argument cannot be made about Mexicans, Guatemalans, Hondurans, and Salvadorans.

Not entirely for the Maya, since the Maya actually weren't only in Mexico. They were just in Southern Mexico and even further South of that in Belize, Guatemala, Honduras, etc. And the Maya weren't all completely integrated; for example, nearly half of Guatemala's population is made up of Maya people.
#21 - nottheoatmeal (09/29/2014) [-]
The mayan were a race, not a civilization, they had wars between them. They had kind of city-states political system. When the spaniards came to the Americas, the mayan were in decadence and were merely a group of uncivilized tribes.
User avatar #33 - thesovereigngrave (09/29/2014) [-]
I don't think that last part is entirely accurate. Mayan civilization (and by civilization I mean the myriad collection of city-states and Kingdoms of the Mayan peoples) still existed when the Spaniards came. It had just declined due to a number of factors. For example, you had the Itza kingdom and its capital that survived until 1697; saying that by the time the Spaniards came the Maya were just a bunch of uncivilized tribes is complete bullshit.

then she should not ask the students to pretend to be filipinos.
User avatar #43 - supername (09/29/2014) [-]
She asks the student and then does not mark it down for following the instructions and being creative. But i'm sure that's much too difficult for the teacher.

I agree that he could have made it easier but it's nothing to lose points over. However, the minuscule amount it is. I firmly believe that learning and teaching to an extent should always be fun and if a student takes a step to make an assignment more interesting then it should be rewarded. I would even say that for a teacher who has probably done that assignment hundreds of times and seen hundreds of the same responses it should be enjoyable to see something new and not burdensome to take one small step to find out what it means. Something as simple as asking the student. Especially, when that student is perhaps more contextually correct than most students answering the prompt in that language. But I think we simply differ ideally on how a teacher is supposed to act.
User avatar #82 - kinginyellow (09/29/2014) [-]
For me it just comes off as a smart-ass style move, mostly because I've been in class with kids who would do that "this is exactly what you asked for" bullshit, and it usually comes off as trying to piss off the teacher rather than do work. It's the whole "following the letter of the law, not the spirit" thing, something that others would use just to mess with somebody.

I just remember my English teacher talking about how he had to go through a lot of essays, and kids trying to be creative just messed with it half the time because he'd either have to spend too much time getting them to explain the content (we're talking a very limited time to grade 3 classes' essays) or take off marks and get bitched out by a parent.

The same teacher also made a point I took to heart: you can't change these people's minds, especially in the higher grades and Uni. They will be a bitch no matter what, and your choice is what your grade's going to be. While it may suck, they will just be known as the hardass or the teacher no one wants to write for, they're digging their own graves.

I completely agree that there are many students who take advantage of teachers and situations similar to this. And in a case like that I see why a teacher would be less flexible in his mindset. I suppose in the majority case you truly do hold merit. But I suppose the reason I hold bias on this topic is that I have had a great many list of teachers who have miserably failed to encourage personal growth in students due to their archaic persistence of using outdated methods of teaching or following the law to rigid. Learning should never be a punishment in my opinion and is also in my opinion one of the reasons teachers seem to find so much resistance in certain students who would otherwise be contributing. To end my "rant' I suppose I may disagree with you but you have a well thought out opinion and you shouldn't delete it on the account of others. I like being told i'm wrong if I have a stupid or differing opinion. It helps me not have stupid opinions and or gives me understanding of the opponents.
User avatar #86 - kinginyellow (09/29/2014) [-]
Oh ya I agree, but I think it's also an issue in that not every student who says the teacher cheated them actually did a good job. I know I thought that and looked through my work a year later, and it was shit, hell I was angry about a 60% on an essay until I remembered I read 1 book instead of the 4 required ones and started to make things up.
User avatar #90 - supername (09/29/2014) [-]
yeah, I had a similiar experience where I looked at my older stuff and can say that I probably deserved some of my scores. But what I was talking about was the teacher who would ask questions to the entire class that she knew know one knew the answer to because she would make comments about it and then mark us down when we got it wrong and then tell us the answer. Or the teacher who wasted class periods not teaching because she preferred to complain about her personal problems. Those are the teachers that I think ruined learning for a lot of people. Now I'm not saying boo hoo for supername because i'm sure everyone's had a bad teacher, i'd be surprised if you didn't, but what I guess I'm trying to get at and what I think a lot of people are also saying is that it really comes down to the whole notion that somewhere along the line grades became more important than learning.
User avatar #81 - supername (09/29/2014) [-]
