If I say "Magic" you'd probably think I'm dismissing your question and giving it a definitive answer, but that is the actual way magic works. Have you read Alan Moore's Promethea comics? You're right, they weren't stupid. However, I think you misconceived the concept of greek arithmetics. They didn't count the knots on a rope, they counted the length of the rope. if they used knots to separate different units, I think they were intelligent enough to differentiate between a knot that does that and a new one that serves the purpose of joining the ropes and can be unaccounted for. I apologize for my previous wording wich difficulted our communication.
