kudos that can just barely balance out the anti-kudos for allowing the shit-stain to behave like that in the first place

I think the kid got a more lasting lesson like that, and let's be honest, we all wish we could be in the opportunity to give that lesson, don't we?
User avatar #11 - captainprincess (10/31/2014) [-]
Not really
I have this rather simple relationship with children

It is illegal to kill them
and they are the product of the species' continuation

These two facts are all that keep me from attempting to violently murder any and all children I encounter in my life. Don't get me wrong, they do a dynamite job. I've never had the serious inclination to try to kill a child, but those two reasons are the wall that stop me from having such inclinations.

As far as I'm concerned, every negative that results from children is worth atleast 3 positives. But y'know, nowhere is it written that anyone has to care what I think of the disgusting little screatures. I'd call them a waste of human resource were it not for the fact that they are human resource.

Maybe for some people, but the people who would get interested in math after they find out what it can do are only those who actually want to help people or do good things. Too many people still wouldn't care, I believe. "If it doesn't help me in my life to know this, why should I know it?"

Maybe it's because people tend to enjoy the arts more than the sciences. They are taught the sciences, and they usually want to learn the arts, so they pursue it in their own time. That way, they get a balance.

If it were reversed, and the arts were taught while mathematics and science were optional, any, many people would never try to learn mathematics and science.

It's like food. If you force children to eat nutritious food, and offer desert, they'll eat both. If you force them to eat desert, and offer nutritious food, they'll just get twice the amount of desert.

This is just a theory, though.

That's another problem: Mathematics is not taught the way it should be.
They say it's like trying to teach someone to paint, but you only show them how to paint fences. You never show them Van Gogh, Picasso, etc. Only fences. That way, nobody really understands even why they are doing it. Have you ever even heard the definition of Math? I only know it after I looked it up on wikipedia. If more people knew the actual way mathematics are useful in the world, and not just how to do them, a lot would change, I believe.

Thank you for the clip, I watched it. Robbin Williams, man

But, still, mathematics, science, and whatnot are more important to be taught than the arts. As said in the clip, they are necessary to sustain life. Now, the arts do add flavor to life. But there are other ways to have access to them or to learn about them without school. If a particular person doesn't want to learn about them, that's fine. But everyone needs to know basic science, math, and languages skills. The arts, while still important in order to not live a dull life, are not as important, but can still be learned through electives, or outside sources.

That's why they are lower on the hierarchy in the education system.
User avatar #53 - churrundo (10/13/2014) [-]
Of course, but Sir Ken Robinson's point is to let the owner of the life to choose what will be that life's purpose. They could also learn maths on the side while focusing on any artistic disciplines they prefer. Instead people's intelligence is generally judged by their mathematic proficiency and any other competence or intelligence they may have is just "an extra"
