I don't know much about the War of the Ring. I've only read LotR and the silmarillion about it.
I guess more is said in the apendix books.
What I said about them is from the Unfinished Tales.

Technically most of Star Trek's tech is based around theories of how things will actually work in real life and it's currently truer to the nature of science and theoretical space-travel than many more modern films.

However Star Wars being disconnected from our own reality doesn't make it a fantasy. It is a fantasy because of all of the magical elements in it, the stylised nature of the universe itself is an aesthetic choice that simply makes it escapist science-fantasy. Mass Effect has a lot of oddities to it that make the world different to what we're currently experiencing/theorising but that's mostly because of the introduction of Element-Zero where they warp the laws of physics to make pseudo-magic based firmly in scientific grounds.

That makes it escapist science-fiction, even if it is very different to what science says the future may be.

I guess you're right. I would still argue that it is a fantasy though. The sci-fi genre is a really interesting one to follow, considering you've got everything from western to fantasy tones in the mix. Thanks for the chat, now I'm off to bed.

Granted, but westerns are defined as being set in the "Wild West". Firefly's a Sci-Fi with western tones, like you said, however Star Wars have very overt fantastical elements to it in the form of the Force.
User avatar #153 - christopherdolan (07/08/2013) [-]
Yea, but that's not the only reason I consider it a fantasy. Star trek for example, is a universe that is ours, it is very much based in reality, but with ludicrous technology and space travel to make it something different. Star wars basically only has like two traits it shares with our world, the humans, and some of the environment, like snowy places and forests.

The Ghost Army didn´t even fight in this battle in the books, Aragorn freed them of their oath after they conquered the pirateships.
So it would probably have been the end of Minas Tirith...

and about the army, there are no numbers stated, it might be that the army was only half of what was initially planned, it might even have been only a tenth...we don´t know
User avatar #210 - christopherdolan (07/08/2013) [-]
Holy fucking shit, thanks for the info. Been thinking about reading the books for a while, but tolkiens writing style just isn't one I'm particularly fond of. Plus, the random songs he put in iriitate me a lot. Might be that's just the norwegian translation that's badly translated though.

Well, about the 2 missing Istari, the only thing that Tolkien stated is that the wandered the east and "founded many a magical traditions after they failed to fulfill their tasks, probably in Rhûn or Khand
Another possibility that he stated is that even tho they failed to fulfil their task to find Saurons hideout back when they were first sent to middleearth, they intrigued and fought in the eastern lands, weakening the eastern armies, which resulted in the fact that the armies that attacked Minas Tirith were way smaller than they could have been. So probably, without them, Minas Tirith might have fallen, no matter what the Rohirim did.
Not much is know about Radagst, tho, other then he too, is one of the Maiar.

If you want to know more about Tom, you should read the Tales of Tom Bombadil, but once again, he´s a very mysterious character and not much is known about him.
User avatar #208 - christopherdolan (07/08/2013) [-]
"A lot smaller than they should have been"
Holy fucking shit that would be one hell of a fucking army. But would it matter though? The ghost army that came at the end wrecked shit up big time for the bad guys and didn't seem to stop in any way, shape or form anyway?

Thanks for the reply tho
