Because people that make a living of filming wildlife, are supposed to show people how the really nature is, it's not a cute rainbow disney place, it's very cruel and that makes sure that only the best and most healthy animal gets to reproduce.

I took those pictures from a wildlife documentary, about the caribou migration, and in the very same documentary they showed a small wolf pack with a male,and female wolf with their two pups.

But sadly the wolves choose to make the den for their pups to far from the caribous, so they didn't had any food, and in desperation and hunger the female wolf and the remaining pup ate the other puppy that have starved to death, while the male wolf looked for food without any succes, and in the end the last puppy did die from starvation as well, even though it was sad for the little caribou calf being alone, it could have saved the wolf puppies.

But no matter if we like it or not, nature is cruel and have always been

Because one of the main rules of being a wildlife documenter (Film, photo, etc) is you do not interfere with nature. No matter how heart breaking it might seem.

Sure, that calf's mom died. But it died feeding a bear or wolves who needed its meet to live. That bear or wolf might have cubs, who depend on their mother to make kills so they don't starve themselves.

At that age, the calf is as good as dead without its mother's milk anyways. Its actually better it lay and wait for the predators to return. At least then its death will be swift and its meat will go to good use. Otherwise it could look forward to a slow death of thirst, starvation, and exposure.

Nature might seem cruel and unfair, but its neither. Its just neutral. How you feel about it entirely depends on who you're rooting for at the time.
