Other M is terrible for a number of reasons. It tried to flesh out the character of Samus but missed any of the traits established in the previous games. In all the games before she was basically a silent protag and it was left to you to infer how she felt about sitiuations based on her reactions, outside of small monologues. In this game she talks more but anything she says can be summed up as The Baby.
The Baby referring to an alien lifeform that she had briefly taken care of before dumping off on scientists which it was stolen from. She then had to try and get it back. Long story short you dont see it again till the end of the game at which point its become a soulsucking behemoth wiping out monsters you cant even touch. It realizes Samus was the one who took care of it in infancy and opts not to kill her. And in the games final confrontation it imbues you with all of the energy its been absorbing so you can kill the last boss which also kills it. This is probably one of the most impactful scenes in a Metroid game and they show it in cutscene from at the start of Other M. Its terrible in Other M. In the original you get to infer how she felt. In M she just has a gigantic monologue over the whole thing amounting to "It made me sad"
One of the other major sins of M was that it made her seem wimpy. In the other games she kicked ass and took names with minimal help or interaction with other people. Going so far as to ignore or go against leaders in the game if she felt their actions were immoral or stupid. In Other M she absolutely obeys a military guy called Adam that she used to have a crush on. One of the game mechanics prior had been to run around and naturally discover weapons and upgrades so you felt yourself growing stronger. Adam removes that function since he tells Samus what she can and cant wear and cant use. Even in situations where it would be incredibly important to use an ability Samus wont because her overlord Adam hasnt permitted it. 2 points where this is incredibly obvious as being stupid is the fire area and when one of the marines is getting attacked. You dont get to activate the heat resistant suit in the fire area where you are slowly dying due to heat exposure until you basically beat the area and Adam OKs it. Additionally when one of the marines is getting attacked and its obvious the only way to reach him is with the grapple, Samus is content to sit and watch him die until Adam says to use the grapple 5 sec later.
Another note about making Samus appear weak is when she fights her arch nemesis. Ridley is Samus' big bad and the most recurring boss in the series. Hes a space dragon that killed her family and shes fought ever since. You kill him in every game and she shows up in the next revived via magic, genetic engineering, cyborg enhancement, or cloning. By the time Other M happens she has fought him at least 4-6 times. Yet when he shows up this time she has a breakdown,starts crying and freezes up, and has to be saved by one of the marines. Its equivalent to the CTRL ALT DEL miscarriage scene in terms of absurdity
Speaking of the marines they're terrible. They are all shitty stereotypes with the most prominent one besides Adams only trait being that hes 'black' and basically acts as a shitty buddy cop.
The guy making the game said he wanted to make a more plot centric game which couldve been good if the plot wasnt retarded. Its too long to go into here but they were so proud of their trainwreck of a story that you can unlock a movie mode for beating the game. It basically lets you watch the game as a cinematic. The story is absolute shit. Samus goes from being depicted as a strong heroine in other games to a blubbering baby about some guy who has no character development. It just completely throws the strong heroine character that she is under the bus. The gameplay is pretty okay but very linear. It's fun if you skip all the story segments and pretend it's like a 3D Super Metroid only not anywhere near as good. Plus, the dude could have easily prevented his own death. It's like they just made up an excuse to kill him. It was laughable.

Nah, at least Other M is playable without game breaking glitches.

Then, yes. It's the Sonic 06 of Metroid.

What? No, the Prime Trilogy takes place between Metroid (or MZM) and Metroid 2, Other M takes place between Super Metroid and Metroid Fusion.
