And that's totally fine, especially if it's something that works for you. I'm not saying it's bad to have a label or be a part of a group like that, I've just never felt compelled to have one or desired one.

I mean I'm only 19 and I live in a very small community, kids my age can walk into a bar and order a beer and no one bats an eye. So you can imagine how many kids are drinking while in high school, pot smoking has been getting worse too. I've just never gotten participating in that stuff. I don't enjoy drinking, you couldn't pay me to smoke, and now that I joined the military if I do either and they catch me I get a dishonorable discharge. I never get the urge to do those sorts of things anyways.

And I knew it had been around for a while because of those guys talking about it, but it still just seemed like another thing where people put a label on themselves and felt like they fit in. I've never needed to feel like I needed to be a part of a group, so I don't join any.

That's good for you mate - I'm the same, I'm 19 in a small community (except I board at a university in the second biggest city in England) and kids drink and smoke weed all around me.
I can understand why you think people do it to fit in, and use it as a label - I certainly use it as a label, but more as a way to legitimise my lifestyle (plus the positive lifestyle, and abstinence from self-harm was very helpful in getting over my depression.)

Honestly it just seems like another one of those edgy teenage groups like goths, emos, pot smokers, etc. Except that it's for people who don't partake in that stuff. Like there is a whole culture behind it. There were a couple of them in my high school and they were always screaming stuff about pizza and video games over drugs and alcohol, and always listened to the same music. It just seems like another silly group to me. Although they're literally the only straight edge people I've ever met in person so I could have a very skewed view.

I don't blame you if that's your only experience. I've never tried to force anyone else to be straightedge, and I did drink for a while (and smoke, never drugs though) so I completely understand when people disagree with me. I just realised it was the right lifestyle choice for me.

And yeah it may be a cult, but it's been about since the earliest stages of the punk movement so I doubt it's as fleeting as emo/goth culture.

I have drank in the past, and probably will again eventually. It's not that I'm against these things, I'm just not really into them.
#116480 - cheesywilly (12/16/2014) [-]
If you're not into them, you don't have to do it. But at the same time, I'm not going to tell you to not do it, because it's a choice and an individual thing, and being straightedge is about choice.
