Actually, Hawking was a major contributor for the first theory. He tried to argue against the newer theory for quite a long time.

i, too, would like to point out something about your word choice
specifically, i believe you meant to say manner in the first comment

when you refer to "a retarded, uninteresting, insulting, and frustrating manor", you are actually talking about a very peculiar house
which i actually find hilarious

not trying to insult you
just sayin
User avatar #587 - severepwner (01/12/2013) [-]
I noticed the manor mistake long after I commented. My grammar is mostly correct.

I'm not referring to your grammar, but your word choice. I intended to point out that your appraisal of presentations of science and math may not strike your fancy, but could strike more pleasing chords with others.

Well yes and no. It is entirely regional but it also relates to the level of industrialization and globalization while not directly referring to it, the factors do apply.

When you are applying it to religion, you are correct, indigenous isn't referring to the religion but more the tribes relation to the religion. Basically calling a specific religion localized in either a small or large region and comparing it's spread to outside groups.

Essentially I'm not saying you are wrong, you are right on a literal level, but in context it still works correctly.
#148 - msfattytroll (10/24/2012) [-]
You're right but for the wrong reasons.

Indigenous just means native like the guy said. The word in and of itself has no bearing than geographic origination.

However, in common usage we associated it with "uncivilized" tribal peoples even though it simply means native.

Language evolves all the time, so while it would be the incorrect word in a formal essay or something, in casual conversation and such its perfectly fine.

Did I just witness a civil exchange of opinions on the internet???!

On the serious note, msfattyroll is correct, albeit the literal meaning is just "native", when used commonly it does refer to low level of industrialization as well.

Indigenous is referring to the fact they aren't industrialized in any way, supporting the fact that they have very little connection with the outside world. Take for instance the irish tribes you just mentioned, before they became more social with outlying groups, they were primarily pagans.
User avatar #124 - cheesymuffins (10/24/2012) [-]
You're referring to the more colloquial assumptions made when we hear the word indigenous (just like whoever made that particular frame), but that isn't what indigenous means. I apologize for choosing a poor analogy.

I'm indigenous to the US. The pope is indigenous to Germany. The queen of England is indigenous to the British isles. Indigenous has nothing to do with religion, industrialization, or globalization.

User avatar #119 - cheesymuffins (10/24/2012) [-]
It is grammatically correct, but it doesn't offer any relevant information. Indigenous essentially means native. Irish 'tribes' are indigenous to Ireland, and are mostly christian. Indigenous as an adjective has no bearing on an religious views.

Chevy Impalas. Silly things. Just don't FEEL like a cop car.

Course, the ISP got a bunch of Chargers, and let me tell you, while they LOOK mean and LOOK like badass cop cars... I'd rather run from one of those than an old Crown Vic. Pieces of junk, every one I've seen.
