It's also never implied that her shortage of food was constant, it just showed that times were getting rough. It may have been much easier before, with all the wreckage from the imperial ships.
She gradually learned to scale the ships interiors and easy to find parts became scarce, and learned to defend herself.
So I think her starvation was more gradual, and not as severe as one would think.
The force was with her after all, and just as times became really bad, shes saved.
Plus the alien guy was said to have taken her in, so he must have fed her enough until she was able to scavenge on her own. [/spoiler]
