I know they give off small amounts of radiation but I dont think it would ever be enough to ever cause cancer

you actually do. the waves give off radiation which can cause cancer. normally all microwaves have a thin-lead cover sheet on the door of the microwave that absorbs some of the radiation, but not all of it. the black stuff on the microwave is the lead
