It's not Notch I'm concerned about, it's Microsoft. What's going to happen to Minecraft's modding community? You think they're going to stay commited to open source? Kiss Tekkit, Equivalent Exchange, Galacticraft, Buildcraft etc. goodbye. Not to mention all the texture packs.

Goddamnit. Browser refreshed all my tabs for some reason and I lost my speech thing :T
Yeah, sadly a lot of games end up feeling that way now since regular updates are now the norm sadly.
One game I really feel that way about is a game called Firefall. In its early stages it was a game with so much promise for combat, and an intricate crafting system; now it's Generic Levelgrind Mmo #444566845: Now With Guns!
Also, a reason I defend mods for games like this moreso than just games with an active modding community. like SSBB I guess. The game as it stands on its own is a really like...buildable. In the SSBB example, the most you can do is swap some textures, movesets, and map data. However, in Minecraft, it's a really open game. Mods can change anything from simple textures all the way to basic game mechanics.
"But they still aren't doing it themselves" you may say, and yeah, they aren't, and they also couldn't,and they also shouldn't since it would lead to lower quality overall from the workload, but they're doing their best to facilitate it.
Think about how many mods there are that completely change the game and shift the focus. Very few of them would be compatible with each other just from a context standpoint, I'm not even going to get into balancing issues.
I had other stuff that I can't remember now as well since browser is being dumb : (
