Magic rings sound kinda retarded to me.

Trying to put magical things in a technologically advanced universe? Not my cup of tea, on the face of it.
User avatar #283 - cconseaman (05/09/2013) [-]
The magic rings come from technology found on a downed alien spacecraft. They really could have just said he found them on one of the alien ships from the avengers, it would have been wrong but still an alteration that the the fans could accept and the public could enjoy.
They ruined one of Marvels biggest badass's.
#78 - It sucked. They completely made a joke of Iron Man's arch nemesis.  [+] (14 new replies) 05/08/2013 on Iron Man 3 +43

When i first saw that one scene, i couldn't believe it. i felt like i was watching some sort of blooper or outtake. That being said, i loved the movie and thought it as handled well

except the ending
User avatar #193 - rockamekishiko (05/08/2013) [-]
exactly plus it was full of fucking plot holes everywhere

DON"T READ THIS IF YOU DON'T LIKE SPOILERS

Yeah I couldn't believe that either. I was able to enjoy it past that, since I feel like they at least did it well by implying that the Mandarin as we know him wouldn't exist - he would be in a different form. They show that the Mandarin is supposed to be the other guy by giving him the big chest Dragon Tattoos.

I was unhappy that they left out the power rings though. I mean, if the Avengers hadn't come out, and they were going off of just Iron Man 1&2, then the way they did it would have made a lot of sense. But the Avengers did come out. They didn't need an exact scientific reason for them - they could have just called the power rings "alien generators" or something and people would have said "oh cool whatever let's see something awesome now." But instead they decided to go a route that left out a quintessential part of the character that they easily could have included.

I don't have a problem with leaving out certain character traits in favor of realism when it fits (ex.- Bain's addiction to Venom was left out of Dark Knight Rises), but they didn't have to worry about realism here. The "fake" Mandarin thing didn't even really bother me because I felt like they found an interesting alternate path to take without completely ditching the character. The power rings are what bothered me.

(although in retrospect I would have loved to see Ben Kingsley play a REAL Mandarin, because I feel like that would have been a much more badass spectacle)

I thought it was an interesting twist, and I think maybe they meant it for the comic book readers who actually know about the Mandarin. Maybe they wanted to surprise them somehow?
User avatar #117 - mattimeon (05/08/2013) [-]
They did, it's kinda how I felt about the Green Lantern movie. But from a cinematic perspective it was amazing, but the target audience should always be the comic readers first then the general public. Alas it is never that way because money talks.
User avatar #126 - kikzs (05/08/2013) [-]
but why? comic readers already have their comics. us, non-comic readers don't know shit, and maybe, just maybe, they want to recreate what they've already read in the comics in their own way, with their own twists, and have it be completely accepted by a major audience, not have to stick to how somebody else made it first.

I get what you're saying and I kind of understand doing that like take Bane for example. They altered him but he was still Bane. The Mandarin was a total badass and was a Villain not what Iron Man 3 did. I love Iron Man 3 and I understand why they did it. It still doesn't stop me from wishing it wasn't the way it is.
User avatar #170 - guymandude (05/08/2013) [-]
I felt the same way. I still enjoyed the movie and understand the twist (it was pretty funny too), but I would have loved to see the Mandarin really put front and center and given a chance to show how big of an enemy he is in the series.

Because if you went by just the movies, which villain would look like the biggest in the series? Right now, it looks like Mickey Rourke as Whiplash. And that is certainly not the case.
User avatar #205 - mrbuu (05/08/2013) [-]
they probably took the magic rings away because i think thanos is going to be the enemy of the avengers 2.

THANK YOU! I thought I was the only one.
User avatar #84 - cconseaman (05/08/2013) [-]
the directors argument for doing this was that people wouldnt like magic rings. In a universe with time travel, aliens, space travel, gods, and many other mildly absurd but awesome things they drew the line at magic rings.
