Unity is the shit. My computer is old, cranky, and runs at lightning speed with Ubuntu.

Pay no attention to my cluttered desktop... been meaning to clean it out

Get OpenSuse. I love OpenSuse. It directly accesses full performance of your PC. My laptop can last 2 minutes until it overheats (115°C max. core temp), but can run Windows forever. On my desktop im able to run OpenSuse ofc.

Of course you dont need it if you wont program or going to run servers. But if you want Linux, get OpenSuse : ).

Ooboontoo is good for starting out, but it's kind of the pleb tier out of all of the distros. Linux is good if you're a programmer or want to run servers, but if you don't do anything like build software or write programs/scripts, OSX or Windows would probably suit you better.

And now I float amongst the red thumbed sea for throwing out some advice

I use Ubuntu for Web Design and Graphic Design and have done so for about a year now, ever since I started freelancing. I've had 0 problems with it, it reads my G-Tablet perfect. I use it for my art, for documents, for Designing and so many more things. Ubuntu is a perfect OS for anyone, it can completely replace Windows with no problem.

I've used Fedora, Backtrack, Gentoo, Mint, and Ubuntu, but I really like Ubuntu just because of the community base.

I agree, having firefox crap out randomly can be inopportune. But most of the time, my system works flawlessly. Even when I have a kernel error, and need to reboot, everything goes right back to where it was.
