For the past couple of years it was pretty simple. 9-12 then 4-9. This past time it was very difficult, 9am-9pm straight for two weeks. It was incredibly hard, but I loved it (even when I said I hated it, haha).

And what about you? I've always wondered how band camp works with the really big bands.

Surprisingly, we've been doing 2PM to 5PM (Music focus), then 6PM to 9PM (Drill focus) for two weeks, excluding Saturdays and Sundays.

My freshman year, when we had a different band director (He got put on administrative leave for being with a kid unsupervised), we did 8AM to 8PM for two weeks, excluding Saturdays and Sundays.

I guess since we have 179 people, we don't have much breathing room on the field, so we chunk through our drill pretty quickly. We learned two movements in one week, which was the week right before our first competition, which we won (We took away a 5 year streak from Willard, MO Cutting Edge Band. They have about 200 people).

Any wacky stories about your band camp experiences? I have quite a few.

I'm considering a few different places. My biggest choice is a local liberal arts college called Lander University. It's about 10 minutes from my house, which is great. I'm also thinking about Furman University and the University of South Carolina, but i'm not too sure.

Yeah, that's what I figured. I want to become the very best I can be, but seeing as i'm starting to get serious about it so late, i'm really behind the ball here. I'm sure I can catch up though.

A good thing is we're starting up a Jazz Ensemble at my high school, so that should help me improve big time as well.

Take any opportunity is what I say! You'll catch up if you put your mind to it!

I'm going to miss how easy high school is, but it is definitely time for harder music to enter my life! I'm one of the top players in my school, and I need a new challenge!

What is your band camp like? Crazy? Fun? Hard?

Very nice! I play bass clarinet in marching season and concert season. I was actually fifth chair bass clarinet in the Missouri All-State Band last year, and I'm hoping to make it again this year!

Do you do any district/state auditions?

BLOO all the way, for sure. It was between them and Carolina Crown (which is about 1.5 hour drive from my town), but we ultimately decided Bluecoats. Who knows, maybe i'll get a spot, maybe not. We'll see.

Best of luck on your auditions as well, man. Hopefully I can make region / all-state this year or next, it would give me some great experience, as i'm wanting to go into Music Education.
User avatar #89 - catkids (10/29/2014) [-]
Same here! I'm already accepted into Missouri State University, I'm just awaiting my audition date for the music program in February.

Where do you plan on going to college at? Also, being apart of district (Region) band and all-state band will definitely earn you brownie points in college! Directors will look to you for difficult pieces.
