If they're first generation children of incest, the chances really aren't as high as you'd think.

ok, how about this:
should homosexual siblings be allowed to marry?
seeing as there is absolutely no chance of them producing offspring...
User avatar #78 - achphoenix (07/04/2015) [-]
an expected response. But why have children? Why not just adopt like homo-couples?
You can make having incest children illegal, without making incest marriage illegal.

And even then, you can argue that it's no worse than allowing two people with a lot of cancer, heart disease, dwarfism or whatever in their gene pools to procreate. But yeah, outlawing incestuous procration specifically is a lot better than outlawing marriage.

Maybe it's something else I'm thinking of, because I know a good friend of mine actually trained her great dane (of all breeds, right? lol) as a personal protection animal - she's never had to have him actually follow through and grab or hold anyone (though he was trained to in the classes they took as a "just in case" precaution), but having a dog that size who will threaten on command is generally all that's necessary - he's taught to visually "lock on" to a designated person and confront them, and will bark or lunge if told to.

This is my girl. She's amazing. Especially in the hot summers, I take my dogs on long walks a lot late at night, and once in a while in such a small town on those dimly lit streets you happen to get a weirdo loitering around, or worse, one who follows you for a while like a dang creeper. I always feel more comfortable when she's inclined to give a good warning growl as we go about our business.

She also ran off a couple guys who tried to get through my gate at nearly 3 AM once. "Oh, hey, I like your dogs, can we come in and sit down for a while? You can put them inside and we can talk about dogs."
My others are either friendly or skittish of strangers; she was the only one barking her head off and showing teeth. One of the bastards had the audacity to ask "does that one bite?" so I asked if they wanted to find out, lol.
Then they "probably should get going, it's getting late" and had to leave. ... Mmhm. K. : /

I like your guy, from what I can see of him in that pic. My oldest boy is 8, Siberian Husky. I also got him when I was sixteen. He's the most useless guard dog in the world though, lol. He might knock someone over and suffocate them with slimy wet kisses but that's about it.

one of my dogs looks malnourished for some reason
the other looks fine
why is that?
User avatar #49 - Dember (07/01/2015) [-]
Could be any reason. Provided one apparently just had puppies, that probably played a big part in her weight if that's the skinny one... they need a LOT of good nutrition while pregnant and nursing; unless you know what you're doing and how to do it responsibly, it's better to not let them have puppies at all. She could also have worms or other intestinal parasites, as do her pups if you haven't dewormed them regularly since they were born. Have you taken her or the litter to the vet?
User avatar #53 - volksunion (07/01/2015) [-]
Well the male is the one who looks skinny.

Hes pretty skinny, and always has food.
User avatar #55 - Dember (07/02/2015) [-]
He may be naturally lean, or he may have something wrong with him. Same questions - has he been to the vet? Has he (or any of them) been dewormed, or fecal tested to ensure they do not have worms? What do you feed them? If you post a picture I can get a better idea if he's underweight or not - showing him standing up would be best. In most breeds, you should be able to feel the ribs, hips and spine but not see them.

Ah, in that case, congrats! I confess, the comment "my dog bites the shit out of her puppies" led me to presume you were unfortunately one more ignoramus who either allowed your unaltered dog(s) to pop out puppies all willy-nilly, or possibly a backyard breeder producing overpopulated breeds or mutts. All too common unfortunately.

This is my youngest shepherd pup, they're amazing dogs. Still yet to grow into those ears, lol.
She definitely doesn't have the kind of drive you would want in a Schutzhund / personal protection dog, much too gentle and indiscriminately affectionate for that.

I have idly considered trying that out with my husky/shepherd mix instead, though - she already turned out to be an unexpectedly good guard dog all on her own, and that's surprising with her being half husky.

It would be interesting to train an "on/off switch" type deal to her already good protective nature; though I'll admit she's pretty adept at it all on her own - if I'm uncomfortable with someone, she gets standoffish immediately. If I'm not, she's the goofiest lapdog and attention whore you can imagine, lol.
User avatar #18 - Dember (07/01/2015) [-]
And I just realized you're not the same person I first replied to, lol.
#10 - casval (07/01/2015) [-]
Beautiful dog! I love white GSDs. Here's a pic of my oldest, Baron. Got him with a part time job when I was 16. He's now 10 years old and has been my loyal and protective companion.

Any dog can do Schutzhund training, and it sounds like your German Husky has the drive for it. But I would be careful about referring to it as an on/off switch - that's more for protection dog training. Schutzhund training, while requiring a hard drive, is more like a game to the dog. They are only trained to bite the helper's arm, sort of like really intense Tug of War. A protection dog is trained to take them down on command and with intent.
