It's not weird at all. Hell, I started doing that just out of boredom and it has led me to write a story that's about 5 years in the making. It's crazy what you can build up to, and it opens you up to many new ways of thinking.
If you think hard enough about why you think of various situations when doing it, you can reveal stuff about yourself you didn't even know you knew about yourself. It is seriously awesome and I would recommend everybody try it.
The story grows on you, the characters you create grow and thrive, and, from my experience, the story has helped me out of some really bad points in my life.
