bleachboi (09/02/2015) [-] mushrooms didn't have the capacity to break them down yet, but they did evolve first. Then trees popped up. Then it took a few hundred millions years before mushrooms evolved the capabilities to break down complex plant carbohydrates, so we had these dead trees that covered the Earth and an atmospheric oxygen content exceeding 60%. Which led to gigantic land arthropods (insects don't have lungs so they have to absorb oxygen through their chitin pores, which severely limits their size today since our atmospheric oxygen content is about 20%). A couple mass extinctions happened when volcanoes decided to fuck up everyone's day. There's a neat episode of Neil Degrasse's episode documentaries that covers a few mass extinctions. Always. Your body requires energy to work. You give it that energy by eating. If you eat less than your body uses, you lose weight. Always, forever. What you have listed are conditions that affect dietary behavior, or cause a decrease in metabolic function. Still energy in energy out. What if a person cannot reduce energy input and it's difficult to output energy? #15 -
lean (09/01/2015) [-] Sucks to be them. That means you have to take extra care to watch what you are eating, as well as how much. It is no excuse for being obese. Overeating doesn't stimulate the metabolism, so if you have a condition that makes your metabolism fall to dangerously low levels, eating more will not help. Keep it at or under that 2,000 calorie mark and it is impossible to be obese. You may not be ripped, will probably be a bit chubby or have that spare tire, but the only way you get to rag on a stick status is by purposely overeating. FYI the difference between a "slow" metabolism and a "fast" metabolism is two hundred calories per day in healthy adults. True "slow" metabolism conditions are rare, life threatening, and usually occur with mental retardation and other disabilities. I'd point you to my independent thread but you've already read it. Severe/untreated hypothyreosis can be debilitating and even life threatening [Especially in developing children and the elderly]. If your Thyroid does not produce enough of the T4 hormone then you have less T3. T3 is involved in the following: -Heart rate -Protein synthesis -Glucose breakdown -Lipolysis I won't bore you with the science stuff so I'll put all the effects T3 deficiency has on the body [Not an exhaustive list]. -Lowered Testosterone -Lowered Basal Metabolic Rate -Lowered Pulmonary/Respiratory output -Muscular degradation All 4 of these both reduce the amount of energy burned and at the same time reduce the amount of energy someone can easily get rid of. Keep in mind that if a sufferer is not eating enough they cannot reduce their food intake without risking malnutrition [There are only so many nutrients you can fit in a calorie restricted diet]. It's easy enough to say that sufferers should exercise more if you are virile but look at it from their perspective - Your diet is already effected and you simply do not have the energy for intense exercise [Although moderate exercise does help]. As I've elaborated, sufferers usually don't eat a lot in the first place. In addition, if your body has less energy than it needs it goes into a starvation response [If the hypothyroidism hasn't induced it already]. This lowers the energy output of your body. This is why under-active thyroids cause weight gain, especially when it induces adaptive thermogenesis and makes the problem even worse. Tl;dr - It's not about overeating, it's about the body simply not using the energy. As every doctor the world over has elaborated, the basics still apply. Recommended caloric intake for someone with hypothyroid conditions = 25 /kg. Assume sedentary lifestyle etc etc. 180 lb person= 81.8 kg 81.8x 25= 2045 to maintain weight. Drop 200 calories to lose. What you eat can help massively- lean protein, raw veggies, whole grains. It takes 3,500 excess calories per lb per week to gain. thyroid.about.com/cs/dietweightloss/a/eatingenough.htm thyroid.about.com/cs/dietweightloss/a/eatingenough.htm #23 -
ubercookieboy (09/01/2015) [-] My god man, are you deliberately ignoring my point? Yes, excessive unused energy attributes to weight gain, but what I'm saying is severe thyroid sufferers have little to no control over this without medication and even then medication may not be available. What I am saying is they have a BMR which surpasses your definition of a "slow" metabolism. They can't reduce their diet because they risk malnutrition [And malnourishment if it's bad enough]. Even more so if the one who has it is a woman and/or a senior. #30 -
anon (09/02/2015) [-] i cant be bothered to read past here, the point of this conversation is that hypothyroidism isnt always a reason for weight gain or inability to lose weight ( i have gone 1 week with out eating anything and lost 1st from my 9st weight.do you think hypothyroidism would of made it so i didnt lose any weight? if your awnser is no, then you are wrong and need to shut up No, I am saying that all the thyroid condition does is lower the bar for necessary caloric intake. They burn less. it's a condition. It's not like their body shuts down. The human body at rest consumes 1300 calories give or take with basic metabolic function (heartbeat, brain, breathing etc). How your body processes food is the difference. The largest single contributing factor to non-autoimmune non cancer thyroid issues is genetics, than diet. The chemical imbalances are related to corisol and insulin, triggered by thyroid secretions. These issues can be regulated by diet unless you have diabetes. You may be referring to insulin resistance- where your body is actually skipping metabolic processes. This can make it nearly impossible to lose weight, at least until your limbs start dying and need to be amputated. This is where your body is burning less than the 1300 calories it needs despite intake, and your shit starts shutting down. Not common, even among gargantuans with a mini fridge full of genetics in their bedroom. I see your creating a counter argument with a list of conditions that could lead to weight gain, However nearly all these condition can be controlled with correct medication. Therefore people with these conditions as long as they are on the correct medication the "energy in energy out" equation still works. And like previously mentioned we cant just start breaking the law of physics to defend fat people. It's not about the laws of physics, It's about what is practical. What if a person is allergic to medication or treatment doesn't exist? What if the person doesn't have access to medical care? I completely understand what your saying as a bigger picture, your right there are sometimes things that are out of people control. But in this situation this British girl is at fault. As a MIU Clinical support admin which i have work for the past 6 years in the NHS in England, to which i also have Type 1 Diabetes (i weigh 79KG, control mine by diet, running and medication). I can safely say this girl is talking out her ass as Hypothyroidism is completely manageable and has no genetic implications (she just belongs to a family of fatties), you can even buy Hypothyroid medication over the counter in the UK no need for a doctors script. Thus proving this girls is just not putting the energy out that she is putting in, therefore making here fat. Some common symptoms include loss of appetite, fatigue and shortness of breath. You can't reduce "energy in" because that will make some of its more general symptoms worse and malnutrition might occur. Energy out is difficult because of fatigue [Since energy metabolism isn't as efficient as a healthy person] and shortness of breath [Making exercise harder]. Perhaps regarding exercise it may be more situational. Perhaps she has a mobility issue or doesn't have the time to dedicate to a workout. | ||
