Ah, that does suck buddy. I'm in a long-distance relationship so it's bittersweet for me. Sometimes I'll smell that someone has the same deodorant as him - it's not an entirely uncommon brand - but I've now got this emotional tie to it. So for a split second my brain gets all confused and annoyed like "that's not who I thought it was. How dare you trick me like this."
I sometimes wonder if I'm not actually a dog.

And what you put there is another reason I refuse long-distance, too much wanting to be there, not enough snuggles.

You underestimate the shittiness of my province. Since the town he's in isn't on the main route to anywhere, there's no bus service between us except rented tours and shuttle services, both of which are expensive. Once I have my full licence there's a van I know I'll be able to borrow relatively often, but that's still a couple months off at least.

Yes I'm Canadian, and sorry, I should have specified: once I've taken my road test. I have my learners at present, which means that if I want to drive anyone anywhere I need someone with a complete licence to supervise, and they're the only other person allowed while I drive. Essentially, I have to not only borrow a car but a fellow driver as well.

The nervousness goes away very quickly once you're done your road test. Just blast some tunes and try to stop yourself from going 40kmh over. Seriously, I find myself having to fight the urge to go to the highway solely to put the pedal to the floor. And of course with all things the more you do it, the easier it is, I for one hate driving where there's lights and multiple lanes, shit terrifies me. But of course, I live in a small town in the bush of Ontario, so I don't do it much.

cause I was alone for 20 years, and I liked my alone time. She'd want to spend all day everyday with me, which wouldn't be bad, but we constantly had to do stuff she wanted to do. If I wanted to watch something I liked, she'd get mad. If I played video games, she'd get mad. If I wanted to hang out with friends, she'd get mad. If I talked to pretty girls, even coworkers, she'd get mad. I went from being free and irresponsible and being able to talk to whoever I want, to being trapped, held down, and getting pressured into marriage and moving in with her and raising her kid.

You made the right choice, man. Those girls are not the type you want to stay with. They feel terrible about themselves subconsciously and try to compensate to make themselves feel "whole" by shoving another person into the gap in their lives. Problem is, because they do that, they feel they have to control you. It can turn pretty abusive and fucked up. Even worse, when you care about them, you kind of give them some of that control so when you get out of the relationship, you suddenly feel like you've lost a chunk of yourself.
If you can't tell, I'm speaking from personal experience. I was in that situation for 2 and a half years. Trust me, give it time and you're going to realize you're better off without someone like that and you can grow from the experience.
Keep your head up, friend. You've got your whole life left to experience.

Thanks man. I dated her for 2 and a half years as well. The last 6 months or so I was constantly fighting with her and planning to break up with her. But sometimes I'd really realllyyyy try to make things work. Then one day I just couldn't do it anymore. It almost did turn abusive. I've never ever yelled at the top of my lungs until I was with her. And I'm a pretty chill guy. Thank you for your comment, it made me feel better. You're awesome
#137 - willys (11/06/2014) [-]
Glad I could help! If it got as bad as things did for me, you might find as the months go by that you don't feel like yourself anymore sometimes. Along the lines of how you said you're a chill guy but things got so out of hand that you yelled like you never have...yeah I know that feeling exactly and it sucks. Just remember that you still are who you are. If you had the courage to end it, then you're strong enough that nobody can take your identity away no matter what else they might get a hold of. It just feels like it sometimes.
#146 - willys (11/07/2014) [-]
Oh no I'm not saying it'll get worse. Nobody can say that for sure. I'm just saying if you go through that phase to not let it discourage you. I've been out of that relationship for about 5 months now and while I still care, I'm at the point where it doesn't affect my life anymore. It won't last forever.
#28 - carlonord (11/04/2014) [-]
I dated someone quite similar, a control freak. She happened to be my first girlfriend and my only one so far. It was always her way or the highway, and I worked incessantly to please her. The big difference is that I didn't have the heart to break up willingly, even after the abuse she put me through, so eventually she dumped me as soon as she figured she found someone better. You made the right choice, no need to be upset.
