Depression (real depression) can't be cured by just deciding to be live life. I think the best way to deal with depression is finding a new hobby.
User avatar #31 - captainfuckitall (09/06/2014) [-]
I know that, I'm not saying it CAN be cured by that, or anything; I'm not talking about cures at all.

What I'm saying is that, no matter what problems you have, at the end of the day, the only thing that decides whether you commit suicide or not is you. Even if many things make you WANT to die, actually DYING depends on your choices and yours alone.

That's what many people seem to be misunderstanding, and led to the absolute clusterfuck you see below.
User avatar #32 - articulate (09/06/2014) [-]
Well, duh. It's not suicide if you don't do it yourself. No one really wants to die. They don't commit suicide to die they do it to stop the pain. Suicide is a permanent solution to temporary problems, but people do it when they can't figure out any other way to fix their problems. But you can't really understand what it's like to be suicidal if you've never been suicidal so there's not really a point to talking about it on the internet.
User avatar #18 - cocosmama (09/06/2014) [-]
Depression can affect you beyond your own control. I have been effectively paralyzed trying to walk up a flight of stairs before. I have had to fight with every ounce of my being to make it up the last 2 steps. And when I finally made it, I laid down and couldn't do anything else for a while. Yes, it is possible to fight depression. But at the same time, it is worth acknowledging that sometimes the depression wins. I was CLINICALLY diagnosed at 16. I am now 30. I still fight daily. The same way a stomach bug will make you throw up no matter how much you fight it, depression can dramatically change the way you act. No matter how much you fight it. Sometimes you have to go to work/school even though you have a puke-your-toes-up stomach bug. Your performance there is horrid. I raise my children and clean my home and do the cooking and shopping and everything even though I have suicidal thoughts to some degree practically every day. I could be more without this illness. But I have it. And I do what I can and try to prevent it from doing what it can.
User avatar #19 - cocosmama (09/06/2014) [-]
P.S. It's not my fault that I'm depressed. I will not blame myself, as you suggested.
User avatar #22 - captainfuckitall (09/06/2014) [-]
You really don't seem to understand what I'm saying; which is fine, actually. Every time I post a comment regarding these topics, people become so blinded by their rage that they rush in, misconstrue what I say, and imply things I never meant. So here, I'll name it out for you:

I never said you should blame yourself for being depressed. I said you should blame yourself for giving up (killing yourself or just letting your life go to shit) if you ever do. Depression doesn't make you give up; it makes you WANT to, but in the end, the deciding factor in whether you give up or not is still you. Your depression is no different than someone dealing with any other type of illness or disorder, but that doesn't make them kill themselves, THEY kill themselves and it's absolutely their choice if they do or not.
User avatar #25 - cocosmama (09/06/2014) [-]
Thank you for the condescending tone. I did not reply with rage. I replied with pity for anybody that has to put up with you. Especially anyone with a mental disorder such as depression.
I do NOT blame myself for my suicide attempt. Because, unlike you, I know how hard I fought every single pill that went into my mouth. I have a life threatening medical condition. I am not "giving up". I am fighting to survive. My illness(es) want to kill me. I want to live. Even with all the pain, I want to live. You just do not know what you are talking about. You have obviously never been depressed to the point of suicide. And for that, I envy you. You are naive and ignorant of the subject which you apparently think you are an expert. And for that, I pity you. You are a pitiful person. If anyone around you ever says they are depressed and/or suicidal; give them a phone number for a suicide hotline. Don't try to "help". You'll end up killing them. And if you have an ounce of humanity, you'll feel guilt. And maybe you'll become depressed. And maybe you'll become severely depressed. And maybe you'll commit suicide. I hope you never reach that point. But if you do, I hope your last thought is that it's YOUR fault. Because you gave up.
For the record: that was all written with pity and an eye toward educating someone in the hopes that they wouldn't fuck up somebody else's life.
Here's the rage: YOU FUCKING SON OF A BITCH ASS HOLE!!! YOU DESERVE TO BE HORRIBLY MUTILATED BEYOND RECOGNITION!! AND EVERY TIME SOMEONE SAYS YOU JUST GAVE UP ON LOOKING HUMAN YOU SHOULD HAVE TO LICK THE DOG SHIT OFF THEIR BOOTS WITH YOUR DISFIGURED TONGUE!! YOU ARE A DISGRACE TO YOUR FAMILY AND GENDER AND COUNTRY AND SELF AND A MILLION OTHER THINGS!! IF I EVER MEET YOU I WILL SHOVE THE FUCKING PILLS DOWN YOUR THROAT INSTEAD OF MINE! YOU ARE THE SCUM OF THE EARTH AND DON'T DESERVE WHATEVER LITTLE BIT OF LOVE YOU'VE EVER RECEIVED!!
See the difference?
User avatar #26 - captainfuckitall (09/06/2014) [-]
Except you are, in fact, upset; obviously. I replied condescendingly because you misread me, which always happens with people just like you. I say something, you reply to something that I never ACTUALLY said, I affirm I didn't say it, you affirm that I did and reply to it again. It's like a fun little game.

You should. Nobody else can get you to kill yourself but you, and saying it's completely something else's fault takes responsibility out of your hands. I'd understand if you're trying to avoid having full control of your life; but if control is something you want, I don't understand why you'd try so hard to dodge responsibility for your actions.

I never said you were giving up (and so my first point is proven), what I specifically said was: IF you give up, it's your responsibility and nothing else is to blame, which is true no matter how much you'd like it to be otherwise.

You're trying very hard to make me feel bad for things I never said nor claimed, and I can only suspect that it's because you fear there are flaws in your OWN argument, so you want to back it up with a guilt trip. Rest assured I would not feel any guilt over someone else's suicide; even if I literally told you "Hey, kill yourself" and you did, it would still be YOUR fault. Nothing in this world can CAUSE you to kill yourself except for you, even if it MAKES you want to die, in the end, you decide whether it happens or not.

Again, rest assured that I would blame myself, because unlike you I take responsibility for all of my actions.

Not really. In one section you're implying you want me to suffer, in another you're directly saying it. The only real difference is that, in the second paragraph, you have the balls to actually say what you want rather than make it subtle.

I tried to talk to this person as calmly as I could and I tried to not take his uneducated opinions as a personal attack. But I obviously failed. This is clearly a sensitive subject for me and his smart ass know it all attitude was more than I could deal with. It would have been better if I wouldn't have taken his bait in the first place; but I did. Does that answer your question?
User avatar #35 - articulate (09/07/2014) [-]
If you're sensitive then don't bother talking about it on the internet. It won't help.
User avatar #36 - cocosmama (09/07/2014) [-]

I don't think depression should be considered as a wrong way of "living" or "thinking" and that it can be solved just by teaching a depressed person to be happy.

Depression is a sickness. It has been shown that brains of depressed people physically behave differently than the brains of people who aren't, hence why there even exists medicine to treat it (anti-depressants) and try to fix the problem.

You cannot teach a depressed person to be not depressed as much as you cannot teach a person's body to to be not affected by a physical illness. Either your body manages to deal with it on it's own (like a simple cold) or it stays and cripples your body and potentially kills you, which in that case needs to be treated by external means like medical treatment (a cancer patient, for example) (this is interesting since depression "indirectly" cause people to die by inducing depressed people to commit suicide (this point can be discussed, certainly, but that's not where i'm getting right now)).

It personally rubs me in a wrong way when people say that depression can be beaten just by having enough "willpower" and that it only depends on said person to be able to cope with it (which to some degree, it is, but not completely). This is the reason why i felt to type this message.

I'm not holding any bad feelings toward you, It is your opinion after all. I just wanted to express my own view on the matter.

(i am not adressing your third point since i do agree with it)
User avatar #23 - captainfuckitall (09/06/2014) [-]
You really don't seem to understand what I'm saying; which is fine, actually. Every time I post a comment regarding these topics, people become so blinded by their rage that they rush in, misconstrue what I say, and imply things I never meant. So here, I'll name it out for you:

I'm not saying that depression, or any type of illness or disorder can be beaten with pure willpower (although I'm 100% positive that some of them can. The mind is a powerful thing, after-all). What I'm saying is that there is no disorder or illness, depression included, that FORCES you to kill yourself. It may feel like it does, it may feel like you want to die, and it may very well increase suicidal thoughts and desire to die; but Depression can never force you to pick up a gun and shoot yourself in the head. At the end of the day, the only deciding factor in whether you give up (die/let your life turn to shit) or not is yourself; nothing else decides that, and to SAY something like that CAN be decided by the illness is to completely marginalize and disregard every person who HAS beaten it and gone on to live good lives despite not wanting to go on anymore.
User avatar #24 - charlesanthony (09/06/2014) [-]
Well, i did say that point was still up for discussion, i myself am still wondering on the conclusion to that issue(so i don't see your point of saying i didn't understood, oh well, no matter).
I said: "depression "indirectly" cause people to die by inducing depressed people to commit suicide", which is pretty much what you said here.(at least, in my words)

I do agree that depression isn't the primal force that causes a depressed person to commit the act, but it has a big role to the build up to it.

This is what fundamentally separates depression from other physical illnesses and that the debate of wheter or not it is a "deadly" illness is still there. The death isn't caused by the failure of the body to maintain itself alive, it is the mind of the person that fails to do so. You could call it a "mental death"(silly term, realy).

I'm not too certain what you meant with that last phrase so my apology if i'm not giving a proper answer.
For any serious illness, you need to be strong to beat it, and that certainly goes for people with depression.

You are idiotic, life is not a game where everyone levels up when they want, there are always be people on minimum wage, ALWAYS. That's the way economy is build, we can't all be doctors, engineers etc., and people that aren't those are just lazy. There is what, 10% of good jobs in economy, and that's it. It's like saying everyone can win a marathon. Sure, but then maratons starts and there will be the first guy and the last guy. Always. Always first one and always last one. And minimum wage workers are also people, they need all what you said, unless you're some asshole that thinks it would be better for 10% of poorest people to die from hunger because they are "lazy".
User avatar #141 - captainfuckitall (09/06/2014) [-]
See, now you're just dealing with extremes because you don't want to face facts. It's not as if every job that's NOT some big C.E.O position is minimum wage, because it's not. There are plenty of jobs, WELL above the 10% claim you pulled out of your ass, that pay more than enough for you to live well, including living well with a family.

A Minimum wage job is not SUPPOSED to provide you with everything. It's a stepping stone until you get more experience

I wasn't pointlessly rude. If you read it more carefully, you would find I am not insulting your god or faith, but rather, the people who spread it about; and even they are just doing it to themselves, while I am mearly making an observation

It's ironic you call me tryhard, considering you just went through the time to thumb-down my last 20 comments as if it would have any effect on me personally or my ranking here. It's also odd you call me stupid, considering you were the one who read it uncorrectly. And I think the fact I have so many comment thumbs anyways (including my own jesus comment) speaks to the point that I am, in fact, quite hilarious. "Feelfag", is that supposed to be a derogatory term for someone who is passionate about certain things? If so, then I take pride in it, as it is only through passion that things grow.

Considering you are pretentious, arrogant, immature, and without a sense of humour; you fit the criteria for '12 year old funnyjunker' far better than I do.

To sum up why i thought it was so funny, a quote...
"Most people would say 'I lost. I give up.', but you, you just keep trying. You're like the Dominican Republic, always killing the guy in charge and saying 'Ah, this new guy, this new guy's gonna get it right!'." - Family Guy

I'm not sure whether I should take that as a compliment or an insult

I choose the former

Thank you, good sir

I just thought I'd let you know that I just did an awful thing and quoted your majestic deep words of death wisdom onto my facebook. I gave you credit, but as part of my shame for stealing I thought I'd tell you. That was honestly one of the best things I've ever read.

Which is also why I screencapped it. Don't worry I swear I'm not going to try to get to frontpage with it I just wanted to save it.

Not at all, I am not concerned with thumbs in the least. If you would like to post it, by all means do so, if you'd like to take credit, do so as well; I care not for material value or fame, as long as comprehend and understand the message

Oh man you just keep getting better:)

But I wouldn't dare steal your credit.
