But isn't it like, let's say a christian complaining about not being able to have 5 legal wives while a muslim is able to?
I'm afraid I will never understand why the government can't split off from the church in legal matters, name marriage for gay people "G-mix" and let gay people get "G-mixed" in the city hall
User avatar #243 - camerel (01/29/2015) [-]
I think from that the big thing is the idea of categorizing them differently. Maybe I'm wrong, but I feel like for most people, being openly labeled/categorized differently than the "expected social norm" is scary. It makes them different and a lot of people don't want to be different, they want to conform to their society.

Your relationship is somehow diminished because some bureaucrats won't give you a piece of paper? I could really give a flying fuck if gays get married, but don't pretend it isn't just an arbitrary document.
#263 - ExorArgus (01/29/2015) [-]
Not being able to see the person you love in ICU is a pretty big deal imo. If you aren't married you aren't family.
#295 - anonymous (01/29/2015) [-]
Getting married isn't the only solution to that. There are dozens of legal proceedings you can take (most of which are less of a pain in the ass than marriage)
#297 - ExorArgus (01/29/2015) [-]
but i'm pretty sure you cant do if you share a gender.
#300 - anonymous (01/29/2015) [-]
You can give absolutely anyone you want power of attorney, and the hospital is under legal obligations to let you see that person.
#301 - ExorArgus (01/29/2015) [-]
With family still alive would a court do that?
#304 - anonymous (01/29/2015) [-]
Absolutely, it doesn't matter what family is still alive, someone can give you power of attorney, and if someone does (no matter who you are to them) you're in control of their faculties, like pulling the plug, treatment options, all that stuff.
#306 - ExorArgus (01/29/2015) [-]
Well you are correct in that case, but there is enough things to show that Family > power of attorney outside the family. heck even with heterosexual couples it gets weird, for example terri schiavo Also not everyone has 1500-3000 dollars to throw away, when a heterosexual couple can download papers online fill them out and mail them. It just seems kinda odd.
User avatar #251 - thesovereigngrave (01/29/2015) [-]
Well it would really suck if your significant other was on their death bed and you couldn't see them because the hospital would only allow family in. Which has actually happened before.
#299 - anonymous (01/29/2015) [-]
Getting married isn't the only solution to that. There are dozens of legal proceedings you can take (most of which are less of a pain in the ass than marriage)

Again, don't give a fuck if gays marriage, but the argument itself is retarded when you can circumvent 99.99999% of the problems associated with gay marriage not being allowed by just using some initiative.

Like I said, some government worker doesn't recognize you as a couple; who gives a fuck what they think? You don't need a paper from the government to validate your relationship. It literally could not matter less.
User avatar #250 - camerel (01/29/2015) [-]
Neither could I, but most people seem to need that.
User avatar #235 - pepsiloco (01/29/2015) [-]
In that case I wouldn't want to get married, unless marriage gives me more rights (think of the children, insurance, etc.). Why define your status by a word that comes forth from a religion that says what you're doing is wrong?
#239 - GeneralAaon (01/29/2015) [-]
There are significant financial benefits yes. Heres a link to some of them (could be more not sure)

www.nolo.com/legal-encyclopedia/marriage-rights-benefits-30190.html
User avatar #242 - pepsiloco (01/29/2015) [-]
Ah see, now this makes sense, but don't they have a form of "legally living together" where you get all the same benefits in the US? I'm from Belgium, we have that sort of thing
#244 - GeneralAaon (01/29/2015) [-]
Theres whats called a "Civil Union" which has most (if not all) of the benefits, but the classification is slightly different.

Honestly they should have never called it "Marriage" because technically it is a religious thing which goes against that "seperation of church and state" portion we have. It should have been "Marriage" in the churches which the govt recognizes as a "Civil Union" and then nobody could bitch because the govt can easily change what constitutes as a Civil Union and religious asshats couldnt complain because it doesnt tread on them.
#247 - GeneralAaon (01/29/2015) [-]
And after a bit more research Civil Unions arent hardly anything compared to marriages and or poorly written, accepted only in selected states..... Its actually hard to look at and say my country has this tbh.....
#256 - pepsiloco (01/29/2015) [-]
I can't believe that the government isn't getting fed up with all the protests and stuff.. if they would just give 'marriage' the same rights as a 'civil union' everything would be solved in 10 minutes..religious(and or conservative) people happy, gays happy, no fights no diggity
User avatar #237 - camerel (01/29/2015) [-]
For most people marriage is a lot more the connection, bond, and commitment you promise to the one you love. You're viewpoint is more literal/physical (kids, insurance, etc.) but the majority see marriage as a more personal thing.

I guess my question related to this is why are people being treated differently based on their sexual orientation? Isn't that discrimination?
User avatar #240 - pepsiloco (01/29/2015) [-]
