I have a very very strange and diverse family history and upbringing.
Too long to write here.

WH40k you say? Hmmm. The Horus Heresy book series is completely fantastic and worth a read for sure, provides tonnes of backstory.
As far as games go I would go with Dawn of War or Space Marine. They are both easily accessible by non Warhammer gamers to get into the universe.

... Good question, you could try playing one of the games or just picking up one of the books and delving in from anywhere, it's not that hard to piece it all together yourself, but the best way I think is to get together with a few proper nerdy types and just talk about it. Us Warhammer fans just love to sit and talk about who would beat who in a fight and all of the little technicalities and such.

#87 - cakefaceify (08/06/2013) [-]
Depends, I'm talking about the WH40k universe, there's more than one game. There are RTS games like the Dawn of War series, third person hacknslash like Space Marine among others.
Not sure if any of them are f2p yet, but Space Marine, which is only worth it for the breathtaking SP, you can just grab off TPB

Since you are essentially my friend Anthony irl (he plays warhammer 40K erryday, at least 5-6 hours a day the board game, I mean ), can you explain to me who the fuck Abaddon is? I never finished Soul Hunter (because Anthony needed to give it back to his other friend smh), and I'm still confused at how he literally just beat the shit out of Talos without even raising a finger.
#183 - cakefaceify (08/06/2013) [-]
If you know about the Emperor you probably know about Horus, the Emperor's "main" son. Horus was the Emperor's warmaster back when everything was dandy, and back then Abaddon was one of the members of Horus' legion's "Mournival", basically the unnofficial backbone of the legion. Abaddon was also the Luna Wolves' (Horus' chapter) first captain, so basically the most important dude apart from Horus himself.
Then Horus went bad, and Abaddon tagged along being his bum-buddy. When Horus died, Abaddon basically took over as the Warmaster of Chaos and as barhah explained controls the favour of the gods and is all in all a pretty mean guy.
#150 - barhah (08/06/2013) [-]
Abaddon the Despoiler is the Warmaster of Chaos Undivided, meaning he is the closest thing to a unified leader they have. He has simultaneously maintained the favor of all four (major) Chaos Gods for ten thousand years, which is impressive, given that they fight each other as much as the other powers of the galaxy. In the Tabletop game the series is based around, he is one of the deadliest characters outside of Apocalypse (which uses continent-destroying, 150 meter-tall Titans).

He is widely regarded as an armless failure by the fandom, due to the fact that his model's arms always fall off, and he is no closer now to conquering the galaxy than he was ten thousand years ago. No, you are not allowed to point out this contradiction to Games Workshop.

You do that, both of them are originally tabletop games involving miniatures, Fantasy is the first of the two, but now they both have computer games and there's a huuuuge amount of literature being written based in both universes.
I know too much about Warhammer in general for it to be healthy so if you have any questions then pm me or whatever.

(Creative Assembly signed a deal with Games Workshop about a year ago which means that the next Total War game after Rome 2 is likely to be based in the Warhammer fantasy world. Nerdgasm.)
