Fun fact: In Qu├ębec, a while ago, "Mongole" which means Mongol, was an insult used to replace "Idiot"

In other words: Mongols are apparently idiots.

No I live in one the most mixed cities in Ireland, two hours from the nearest gaeltacht. It's good to see an interest in the language. I was taught through Irish and honestly, beyond primary school I believe it damages education. Irish is a nice language, good to know, nice to speak occassionally. My girlfriend and I speak it a bit just for practise. But at the end of the day it is dying. I 'speak' latin a bit too. If I had to take one it would actually be latin. It is of more use to me in my scientific studies. We also prefer being part of the wider world. We are known for being some of the friendliest on the planet.. Imagine us not being able to talk easily with the americans, canadians, aussies (which i am half) and yes, even the uk. Personally I believe the way to save Irish is to actually not have the state force it down our throats. If they made it optional, but actually included as a 'foreign' language (a prerequisite for entry to university) numbers would drop yes, but interest would be higher in those who take it.

In many ways I believe our heritage is more than the language, I think it's our ability to poke fun at ourselves, our outlook on life. It's our memory of our homeland, our closeness to nature. It's Mammy knows best, stew and guinness. It's our history, good and bad.. and belive it or not, we have quite a proud history even under english rule. It is undoubtably in the GAA and recently our Rugby. GAA is hard to describe.. it is the pulse of our country, the pride of the parish, the clash of the ash. HON THE REBELS. It's pulling in on rustic roads to allow the tractor and herd of cattle past. Our language could actually die.. being Irish is so much more. I think even a few will keep it alive for a long time to come.

I have to thank you for your inquisitiveness. I have never thought much on it, but the pride I feel thinking on the little things brings a tear to the eye.

It's difficult, honestly I dont understand the grammar, syntax or even spelling a lot of the time. I can speak it fairly well cuz i spent from about 4 to 12 doing my schooling through spoken irish!

So you live in the Gaeltacht? From what I've read, even in these areas, schools are often opting to teach in English due to lax pressure and lack of governmental support. In general, whenever I check on the status of the Irish language, it's usually extremely perilous and depressing. That's part of the reason why I'd like to learn it, honestly. I've never understood why 100% Irish people living in Ireland, living in a place where a sizable proportion of people have been taught Irish, still opt to speak English, even at home. It's like taking a shit on your heritage.
