At first, I assumed someone took the original footage of someone dying and cut scenes when she pointed the camera down, and had someone else dressed in the same gear stand up. Now that I look at it, the backdrop is exactly the same in both scenes, so that can't be it.

It is strange, though, that he happened to land right in front of them without a steerable parachute. My next guess is that the entire thing was set up, and when he curled up in midair, they cut to a curled up dummy about to crash, but that would be pretty sophisticated.

I'm convinced it's fake because I can't find any information on it (and this would make headlines), but I'm not really sure how.

For always, only arthropods posess the conditions needed to be paracited by these fungi, not only cordyceps, but many otehr families of fungi as well.
Our anatomy, and especially our different nerval system would make such a scenario pretty fucking unlikely.
User avatar #137 - penileburglar (05/22/2014) [-]
"Nerval system,"

You're absolutely correct in your overall point, but also very clearly completely BSing the details.
User avatar #229 - metalmind (05/23/2014) [-]
So, what do you base your opinion that I'm bsing the whole thing on?
User avatar #230 - penileburglar (05/23/2014) [-]
Well let's see...

There's the fact that you used close-to-real but completely made up phrases like 'nerval system,' and 'Paracited.'

There's the fact that cordyceps are not a family of fungus, they're a genus of fungus.

And now you've graciously provided even more information, the fact that I literally quoted exactly what made your comment sound the most like BS right at the beginning of my comment and you apparently still couldn't figure it out.
User avatar #231 - metalmind (05/23/2014) [-]
Sorry, those are mistranslations from "Nervensystem" and "parasitiert".
Sorry for not always knowing the brt translation.
And you also didn't provide more than claims without evidence in the part of you comment where you tried to explain it.
And although there can never be absolute certainty, this specific species of fungus does not posses the capability to parasitize humans.
And just to point out a mistake you made with the classification of this fungi:
It's not technically a cordyceps, it's a member of the ophiocordycipitaceae.

#225 - metalmind (05/23/2014) [-]
No, I meant that point.
Sure some fungi can produce chemical compounds that can influence mammalian brains. But not the one we are talking about, and not he kind of effects we are talking about.
But the substances that ophiocordyceps unilateralis produce do not work on mammals.
Although what you would commonly call "cordyceps", the one that "zombiefies ants", isn't a cordyceps fungus at all.
And you have to remember, that allthough there are hundreds of identified cordyceps species, only one is known to change it's hosts behaviour. Although these other fungi, if they paracitize animals and not other fungi, are lethal to the arthropods (although not all kinds, different fungi have a different range of hosts, with some species only infecting one arthropod species, and others hundreds of different species), when they multiply in the system, but do not change the hosts behaviour.
But the substances that change the ants behaviour would not have the same effects on us.
Sure there are bioactive chemical compounds produced in this, and cordyceps fungi.
But none of them have an even similar effect on our brain.
I meant what I said.
But if you are certain that you'reright, please argue your case, and let me learn something.

Cryptococcosis is a fungal infection caused by either of the two known species of the cryptococcus fungi. Infections can arise from wounded skin coming in contact with spores, ingestion of spores, or inhalation of spores. Both cutaneous and pulmonary infections can result in dissemination of the fungus throughout the host body and ultimately cause meningitis, an inflammation of the meninges, or the membranes surrounding the brain and spinal cord.

It is true that the only recorded animal hosts to cordyceps are arthropods, mostly insects and arachnids, and any other hosts are other fungi. However, there is no impossibility for any fungus to infect the nervous system of a human, and there is no impossibility for any nervous infection to cause behavioral abnormalities. Zombie-like behavior is pretty specific though, and it would likely take large periods of evolution to develop, if that type of infection is even advantageous. A mutation that causes the cordyceps fungus to infect mammals would be a lot more likely.

You say that only arthropods possess the conditions needed for this type of infection, but that's kind of obvious. That's the reason the current species don't infect anything else. But if the fungus were to mutate to maybe infect more exclusive areas of animals, or have more resilient spores, or infect more conservatively, it could jump phyla and start infecting bigger things.
User avatar #228 - metalmind (05/23/2014) [-]
Well, it is only one species that is known to have this effect, and it is not a true cordyceps by the way.
There is very good evidence that similar fungi infecting ants with similar effects on their behaviour have existed for at least 48 million years, but in these most likely 48 million years, a fungi has yet to develop a chemical compound with the ssame effect on the mammalian brain.
There are certain viruses that produce substances that make animals more agressive, or more dossile and friendly, but they none that cause such a specific pattern, and a complex change in behaviour of the host as ophiocordyceps unilateralis dues in ants.
The chemical compounds that cause this change in behaviour in ants just are not suitale to produce the same reaction in mammals.
