1. Not a solid cover if it's acoustic. It is therefore an improv and not a cover. Only cover by basic means, but I'm being technical there.

2. Her actual slides and note playing is fucking superb, though. She deserves to be noted for that, because she really forces the frets to cut out any buzzing and improve the audio range.

Still, not Jimi Hendrix. I want to see her play with her teeth and behind her back with a lefty guitar that hasn't changed the strings. Then she might be close. Also, she has to soak a headband in acid and perform on stage so when she sweats, she soaks in the acid and starts tripping.

Okay, I'll accept what you're saying to a degree. She certainly isn't immaculate, and people won't recognise the smaller flaws. But really, in comparison to some other performers on YouTube, she is really nothing. Compared to others, why aren't they more popular because their talents are better? And that brings me round to my original point: She gets views because of her tits. I never said her guitar playing is horrendous, but let's face it, did many people click for her performance? Of course not and you know I'm right.

Regardless of a degree or not, the errors should be noted because they are what can help her improve her playing and actually show off the talent she seems to want to show off. The strumming pattern was not in time as the last strum was about 1/4 beat out, and just because you can tell it's call me maybe doesn't justify it. You recognise she is playing that because you identify the rhythm which is consistent and unfaltering. And how can the original be "out of time"? Every song has it's own time score, and just because it may not match an 8 beat bar or 12 beat doesn't mean it's out of time. In fact, there's a whole genre of music dedicated to out of time and unpredictable guitar. When I said her pinky finger, I'm talking the one she uses to fret the guitar and it is clearly visible in the video. Technically, she IS palm muting because where she is gently tapping the string(s) to keep in time, she is fretting to a harmonising level which means if it was amped, the palm mute might be more obvious to your ear. And yes, a lot of people will notice vocal range. People watch these videos to understand how to control their mouth for vocal chord stressing, and regardless of whether the commenters notice her voice or not, it compiles into one eclectic mix that they do understand is not as talented as others.

But I actually appreciate your argument. You reason well, and you don't get graphic to prove your point. I have a lot of respect for you.

i never said she was perfect, just that saying that she isn't talented is thoroughly incorrect, and you have to get credit where credit is due, even you said that in her hendrix cover that she did well, (technically on parts but whatever. and who says a cover can't be acoustic? that's just nonsense) and of course people are watching her videos for the tits. i never said they weren't. she's got a million views for tits, but 500k subscribers, because she's actually pretty good. i gotta run to school.

This is some of the easiest for me to break down.

To begin with, her chord form is actually mirroring the backing. She is effectively playing a double rhythm set instead of overlapping a lead to a rhythm, which gives the audio of the chords and guitar a flat sound and does not give any dimension.

Her strumming pattern does not identify with that of the original song. Strumming patterns may be modified, but hers augments the chord transition so that it is out of time.

Her chord shaping is not correct for reduction of fret buzz. She performs the chord shapes with her pinky finger hanging upwards, which stresses the hand and forces the thumb up to the top of the neckboard on the back, which actually stiffens the hand muscles and can damage them with constant playing.

Her scale lead at the chorus was dry and did not match the song. Since it is different, the notes she plays must fit into the scale of the song, which is a G major. She hasn't learned her scale of major pentatonic correctly, in fact she hasn't learned it at all by the looks of it, and she therefore cannot correct her missed notes or improvise over it. Major Pentatonic is the first and most basic scale any guitarist should and will learn.

Where she gently strums over the backing, she actually does not strum hard enough for a solid noise to register. This, combined with her flattened hand form, is considered palm muting, which is not consistent with the song form at the verse.

Her vocal range does not match that of the original singer, which was G3 to C5. She actually misses out on the ideal range, which might be acceptable for the fact she is playing guitar, but she does not correct for it when she doesn't play.

That's some of the basic stuff. I would go into more complex music theory involving note progression in circles, but I wouldn't expect her to adhere to that since it's actually very complex. But yeah, that's what you asked for, that's what you got. I don't criticise everything, just the poor.
User avatar #86 - brrigg (06/03/2014) [-]
not having the education in music theory/ composition/ whatnot that you have, i'll automatically concede any points concerning matters that i'm not familiar with, or can't roughly understand.
but in the same breath, if it takes a music degree to notice these flaws, are they even worth pointing out? i mean, is everybody in the world a music major? no, they're not even gonna know these things are happening so why should they care?
the first thing i'll argue, her strumming pattern not identifying the original song. i could tell pretty well that that was call me maybe, and i don't fell it was out of time, the original song isn't pretty in the first place, it already sounds out of time.
second, how can you criticize the position of her pinky finger when it's never in the shot while she's playing? and she doesn't palm mute anything, i think you may be confusing the music playing in the background for her actually playing, she's just singing for that part.
but chord form and vocal range? who is going to notice that, are you telling me that everybody coming on here and saying she isn't talented has enough musical education to notice that and hold it against her? no.
User avatar #90 - sciencexplain (06/03/2014) [-]
