You replied to my status, this is just a quick little design that I made up.

The spring and hooks are so that way I could change out the chord easier and do inner cuts easier as well. I plan on having it so I can flip a switch to turn it on and off. Is 12 volts and 2 amps too strong? Because I've got a wall regulated chord and female bit that I could use to power this thing.

no thats not too much juice. I remember having to change strings once because I wasnt getting enough "heat" out of it though, I was using a PC power supply corsair 5something. I have a hot knife and hand held cutter now. is your setup stationary? like you're going to manipulate the foam around the wire instead of the other way around?
User avatar #6 to #5 - Sewallman (09/17/2015) [-]
It'll be stationary, but I'm planning out a hand held one made from a flashlight as well.

I've heard that a constant of 2 amps is preferred, some people I've seen dumbed down 24 volts to 4 volts, another thing I was reading was 8 volts and 2 amps.

I'll be using it to make foam molds for aluminum casting some snare drums, so it needs inside cuts and I need something as fixed as possible. The hand held one will be for cutting out snare beds and angleing the edges to 45 degrees.

ah i see. yeah I use mine mostly for car projects, seats mostly. are you using a phone charger or something similar as your power?

You know how back in the 90's, you probably had a drawer filled with cords that look like this?

I figure it's the best way to have it plug into the wall without any extra resistors.
