I know that feel. My Asus n53SV was on sale for $500.01.
2nd gen i7 @2.7ghz per core, 12gb RAM, 1gb Nvidia GT540m (not top of the line, but gives me 40 or so FPS on BF3 at medium-high detail).
Mac users and elitists seem to feel like the more money they spend, the more superior they are. ALL of my friends with their $1200 Macs come to me asking to speed up their computer that they bought a 2-3 years ago because it is either terribly slow or too old/weak to run XXXXX program they need for their classes.

tldr - Buy something that will work for you longer than the next software update. And in case it doesn't last you that long, buy something cheap so the upgrade won't hurt your wallet so much.
