The magic shrunk the cannonballs in the first place. Reducing their mass in the first place. Assuming the laws of physics are intact this should be impossible but it's allowed for. I think we can disregard conservation of momentum in this case.

Well no, when you shoot the shrunken cannonball it leaves the barrel around 800 feet per second. After it passes the ring it's velocity shouldn't be changing, only it's mass and size, thus resulting in a cannonball with velocity of 800 feet per second leaving the barrel. Now here is the really fun part: because the mass and size are changing after the projectile has left the gun, the shooter only feels the recoil for shooting with a normal flintlock.

you suck at physics.
P = MV
momentum is conserved, faggot.

Actually, it's a ring of antimagic, so newtonian physics are in play.

You suck at magic.

All i've done is provide enough logical argument for the non-present DM to put his foot down, if he so chooses. Pretty sure arguments are a part of imagination games.
#109 - theism (12/12/2014) [-]
Additionally there's no clear correlation between DnD magic and real world physics. It's entirely possible conservation of momentum would not apply.
User avatar #110 - Lilstow (12/12/2014) [-]
i 100% disagree.
if we're going to argue the some of the most fundamental laws of physics, then i will say that a universe that doesn't follow basic laws like conservation of momentum would be so vastly different, that they transcend our imagination.

but that aside, the overall fact is that if anti magic is in play, then projectile motion should behave how one would logically think it would, and the most sensible behavior is that a pinch of gun powder will not propel a cannonball very far.

also, like i said, all i've done is given plenty of reason for a DM to ban this weapon, because if he was angry about it like the original post said, than he would probably want to do so.
#111 - theism (12/12/2014) [-]
Since shrinking magic isn't real, i doubt you could apply conventional physics to it. Yes a DM could use Newtonian mechanics to shoot down this idea, at the risk of looking like a dick to his players.

I'm aware of basic physics. That assumes that momentum is conserved and physics is brought into consideration.

There are Newtonian equations describing the effect changing mass has on moving objects. They slow down.
Momentum must be conserved. The bullet or ball must have equal momentum. Speed will be traded for mass.
#48 - acerose (12/11/2014) [-]
You're right about the second bit, but you are not doing anything to supply the energy required to cause such a huge increase in momentum, all you're doing is dispelling the effect which made it the original size.
The momentum will remain constant.
